An equestrian statue of General Francisco Franco has been removed from the main entrance to Zaragoza Military Academy, by order of the Defence Ministry.
The statue, which dates from 1948 and was donated by Zaragoza City Hall, was lifted off by crane and set off for its new home in Zaragoza Provincial Museum.
Defence Minister, José Antonio Alonso, has announced a competition for ideas for a new monument to stand in its place. He has asked for ideas which best represent the role of the Army in the Spanish Constitution.
The flag of Spain will fly outside the Academy in the meantime.
The Zaragoza statue was one of the few to still stand in the country since Franco’s death in 1975. Its removal follows approval this February by the Congress defence commission of a proposal to urge the government to remove it during the current military academy year.
Just one of the remaining four is on public view. It is in the Town Hall Square in Santander, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, and formerly known as Plaza del Generalísimo Franco until 2001.
