Good site indeed. The black and arabs were used as cannonfodder during the WWI, they were treated like shit and sent on the frontline the first which mean they were killed a lot. France has always used foreigners for it's wars, even at Napoleon time, many germans and italians were involved on the french side.

I'm amazed at how great the quality is. THen again, I forgot how good France's technology was before WW1.
A technique sadly lacking in the most criticial department: their military.

The black and arabs were used as cannonfodder during the WWIArabs were among the highest ranks in WW2 and also in WWI. Well, actually the lighter skin Arab ones.they were treated like shit and sent on the frontline the first which mean they were killed a lot.Sadly but true. They fought lot's of wars for their Master in Paris.France has always used foreigners for it's wars, even at Napoleon time, many germans and italians were involved on the french side.Yes. That's why Napolean sended in his German regiments against the Austrian's, and Spanish Republicans against the uprising in Madrid.
A technique sadly lacking in the most criticial department: their military.WWI and WW2 has proved that already. The Germans were fighting YET again in a 2 front - war - That's why i never respected the French in the first & second of the Great European wars. They had the British backing them up, they even had more improved Tanks and fighter-planes than the Germans had, and not forgetting the superior numbers.
How the Germans pwned the French! (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lepoilu/ww2/ww2history.htm)

Complete horseshit. It's a chop. No black man ever wore a european uniform in WWI. They're too fucking stupid to use buttons and wear boots.

The colour in those pics looks better than some colour photos I've seen that date from the 60s... Yikes.

ya, that's exactly what I thought. It's a shame, but I wonder how much the French company profited from their design. They definitly would have made a killing if they sold more cameras and marketed it like American companies do.
Wow, that second photo looks like it came from a film.

Not all of the photos loaded for me but some of them featured blacks, including one of the ones posted in post #2.
How many blacks were there in the French Army in WWI? And how many total men did the French Army mobilize? The second question being to determine what percentage of the French Army was composed of blacks. Maybe the easier question to answer would be "how many non-whites served in the French Army in WWI". If anyone knows how many blacks/non-whites they had, please post
I know that 8-9% of the 4.7 million soldiers the US mobilized in WWI were Black, but they mainly performed menial jobs, not combat like many of these French Army photos seem to show

This photograph was probably taken after 1915. Before that date French troops wore bright red pants...

Fun fact: If my source is correct, the reason French troops wore those moronic red pants is because they were originally adopted to make work for the French red-dye industry.
Horizon blue was marginally better than the early uniforms, but in so many ways the French had crappy stuff. Their uniforms featured stupid colouring (French Foriegn Legion and a lot of African troops got more appropriate uniforms, as can be seen in one of the pics), the Adrian helmet was not especially good, and their rifles were pretty crappy: IIRC, at the beginning they had a rifle with an 8-round tubular magazine... This meant loading was done bullet-by-bullet. It was replaced by a rifle with a 3-round magazine. Er. This was later expanded to 5 rounds. A lot of British soldiers reportedly would have preferred fighting with the Germans against the French.

By the end of the war, the French were pretty dependent on African, South East Asian, etc soldiers.

I don't know what's more pathetic, the uniformed savages or civilized kinsmen murdering each other.
