YO.
OK I'm going away in the summer with a girl and I need your opinions of a spot thats not too chaotic, thats interesting and of course does have to many marauding, disgruntled Arab youths who burn out our rented car :D
Good points I'm looking for of destination; romantic, quiet enough, good scenary and perhaps some history I can check out myself since I am quite fond of the granduer that was old Europe (alas she withers daily, see it while I can).
Suggestions.
Oh and we are going to London anyway so thats counted out.
I went to London a few years back, it was fun.
I think Italy is a real nice place and it's known to be a romantic place. France (I've only been to Paris) is also nice.
Either those two...Amsterdam or the Eastern European ghetto.

Italy has been suggested a lot, I'm thinking it sounds like the best place to go alright.

If you make your way over to the Caucuses, I strongly suggest Tbilisi, Kutaisi, or one of my personal favorites, Alazani Valley (where you can find total seclusion and an excellent view of the Caucus background). Plenty of history with a very traditional atmosphere.

The Dutch countryside is nice. Avoid Amsterdam, though, unless you're with somebody who knows the place. Interesting fact: The greasiest food I have ever eaten was acquired in the summer of 1997 at a kebab place in an Amsterdam railway station. It consisted of kebabs and potato fritters. It stained most of an issue of PC Gamer translucent.
Belgium has some nice towns, and the food is very good. My father says that the two best places to eat in Europe are Belgium and Italy.
In Germany, I love Freiburg im Breisgau. There's a very nice hotel there, not too big, with a good restaurant, the name of which I cannot remember. My father will undoubtedly know. Have to ask.
My experience of France is mostly limited to Paris. The nicer parts, to be precise.

I think the best season to come in Europe is the spring, around may-june. Students have already finished their class, girls start to wear cute clothing, people seems more relax because of the weather etc.
I won't recommend to stay much in the main Europeans cities, all filled with wogs, of course they are interesting to visit for historic stuff to, but don't stay too long there.
The countryside of Europe is great, in any country, In France, Normandy is great although a bit cold, even the summer, Provence is ok too, but kinda expansive.
The best nowadays seems Croatia, it's cheap, infinitely cheaper than any other, people are pretty friendly and the weather is excellent. I've been there in 1989, never came back yet but I think I'll go again someday.
And yes, Italy is great for it's food, it's way of life, if you like southern Europeans, you won't be disappointed. Many old Roman architecture still exist there.
And don't worry about the language non-english speaking Europeans have improved their english skills recently, english is mandatory in every school in Europe now.

Atlas is right, Spring is the best time for exploring European cities
Don't go in August unless you're planning to spend your time on a beach
Late September is another fine time for trips to southern countries like Spain or Italy
Rural areas of Spain provide many quiet, secluded locations in which to strangle your girlfriend and dispose of her body, preferably dismembered and the parts scattered about.

Sagres Bay in Portugal.
The view over the cliffs at Vila do Infante where Prince Henry the navigator probably bulit his school in the 15th Century is the mostly arrestingly beautiful thing I've ever seen. So much so, that I'm actually hessitant to go back in case it's not as stunning as I remember it.

Croatia's looking extremely nice. Too bad my next trip to Europe, sometime next year after I graduate, will be to Belgium and Northern France, to see the WWI battlefields. Hm. Shoehorning a trip to Croatia in... I wonder if that would be practical.

I'd recommend Austria. I went about 11 years ago and the scenery was breathtaking, the place was spotless, the food was great (well, the Italian and Hungarian dishes were nice. The native Austrian stuff was piss-poor), and the people were friendly. Even the old Austrian gentleman that owned the hotel and kept clicking his heels & bowing to greet us :)
