Croatia beat England 2-0

NDTV Correspondent

Thursday, October 12, 2006 (Zagreb):

After attaining three wins in his first three games as England Coach, Steve McClaren was the toast of England.

But football's a fickle game and reputations can be won and lost in a matter of hours.

That's just what seems to have happened to Sven Goran Eriksson's successor after a goalless draw to Macedonia and an embarrassing defeat to Croatia in the span of four days.

On Wednesday, England battled Croatia in Zagreb and playing a 3-5-2 formation for the first time since the days of Kevin Keegan, the cracks in the English defence were evident from very early on.

In fact, Paul Robinson, who's now replaced David James as England's number one keeper had to muster all his skill to keep Croatia from getting on the score sheet.

However, the deadlock was finally broken after 70 minutes, as England, who looked content on sitting back and defending, were be made to pay by Da Silva giving Croatia a well deserved 1-0 lead.

Robinson had had an exceptional night till then too keep the score at 1-0, but then his worst nightmare came true as a harmless backpass ended up as an own goal for England.

The win means that Croatia kept intact its record of never having lost to England at home, but beyond that it means a lot of thinking and more hardwork for McClaren and his men.

Nice. Perhaps those fan-swastikas do the team some good. England should try it some time. :D

You mean those juveniles who shaped their bodies forming a Hakenkreutz? If they presented a Roman salute I would have condoned it wholeheartedly, but Hakenkreutz was out of place IMO.

You have to admit it was a damn witty retort to those taunts.

England defeted , I didn't see it in the press - who would want to have that job for a pension - mission impossible.
:bitchfight: in the press from hacks who always know better and have cyrstal balls.

It happened in Livorno after leftist Italian fans started to wave with flags of ex-Yugoslavia and sing ex-Yu anthem.

If our fans responded to Italian pro-Yugo Commies of Livorno with swastika, than what symbol shall they use to respond to Italian pro-Serb fascist of Lazio? A hammer and a sickle perhaps? It also probably wouldn't be a bad idea...

I think our chessboardfields and 'U' is a sufficient insult to enemies of any color - red, brown or black.

Did anyone noticed Borat on the side screen commercial panels when G.Neville and P.Robinson made that second (own) goal? I was laughing my ass when I later noticed this. :p

Borat: Jagshemash! I like you.

Congrats on your victory, it was a good game. You were lucky that Paul Robinson made that mistake though..

Two of the best fan groups in the world against eachother, must've been quite an atmosphere there. :)

Was any of you guys there? Any pictures maybe?

Lucky? They would loose anyway....they were lucky not to get 2-3 goals more and Robinson saved their a$$.

And besides it was not Robinson's mistake but G.Neville's...the first thing they teach you at various football "acadamies" is: NEVER return the ball to your goalkeeper directly to the goal because the exact thing that happened to Robinson can occur.

Well OK, you are right, I admit Croatia was better and they deserved win.

Anyway, why wasn't Klasnić playing instead of Petrić?

Because Petric scored 4 few days ago against Andorra and he scores at least one in every game for his Basel in Switzerland.

I would rather see Croatia losing than seeing niggers (Da Silva) playing in our team.

I'm sorry to have to disagree with you, Domagoj. I think the swastika was a good statement to put forth. It wouldn't have been different than doing that salute, which people view as a Hitler-salute more than a roman salute. I think people would've had a similar reaction.
