NOVI SAD - Thursday – A group of Neo-Nazis broke up an anti-Fascism forum, assaulting several attendees.
A group of 25 men entered the Philosophy University in Novi Sad, where the forum was being held to commemorate the International Day for the Fight Against Fascism. The group then struck several of the attendees and began to threaten the organizers of the forum.
The university’s Dean, Marija Kleut, who has in attendance, said that a group of muscle-bound, short-haired youths entered the hall fifteen minutes into the forum, and initially began to holler and get in the way of the forum discussions by yelling out Fascist salutes and greetings.
“Professor Perovic told them to sit down, they said that they would not, and then took an aggressive stance and began to threaten his son. I then left the hall and, since there has a good chance of the verbal conflict turning into a physical one, I called the police, who did not arrive in time to apprehend any of the individuals.” Kleut said.
The Neo-Nazis focused most of their attention on Professor Milenko Perovic, calling him an “Ustasha Pig,” and said that they would wait for him in a dark place, and that they are planning to do something special to his son as well. Perovic told the BBC that he is not frightened by the threats and that it is not the first time that someone has threatened him because of his societal stances.
“In Novi Sad, in Vojvodina, in the entire country, a state of confusion rules, and there are many open questions, creating the ideal conditions for the appearance of these ultra-extremist groups, which find sympathizers in various areas of society. There are no criticisms of this type of extremism coming from official spheres, the opposite is happening, it is being completely ignored. Whether they see extremists as their natural associates, that is an open question, but unfortunately, this is our current situation.” Perovic said.
Novi Sad University Rector Radmila Marinkovic said that there has never been such an incident at this university before.
“We are a university that is open to dialogue, reasonable thinking, different opinions, but never and in no way, to violence.” she said.
