Why always this rosy paiting in the bolshevik assistance to the Republican Goverment?

As Britain holds Remembrance Sunday this weekend in memory of the lives lost across the armed services, the memory of the members of the International Brigades who fought against fascism in Spain are being honoured in quite another way.

It’s thought that there are now just 22 surviving members of the International Brigades still living in Britain, and their efforts and those who have since passed away are now being remembered in a piece of theatre which opened in the Shaw Theatre in London.

¡Ay Carmela! is a well known piece of theatre in Spain, and was made into a film by Carlos Saura in 1990, starring Carmen Maura.

It tells the story of how two Republican members of a comic troupe, Carmela and Paulino, get caught up in the war. Just before they are about to be shot by a firing squad, an Italian official realises that they are comics and offers them work to entertain the Nationalist side.

Now a new translation into English of the work written by Jose Sanchis Sinisterra, has been made by Steve Trafford, and members of the International Brigade Memorial Trust have been invited to see the show, to the great joy of the author. Since the work was written in 1987 it has also been translated into seven other languages, and it seems the story of fighting in defence of freedom is understood in any language.

We recommend the play, and the film, and we thank all the members of the International Brigades who fought for freedom in Spain.
