Thing is, they aren't being "protected" in this particular article. Of course no government will flat out say "to hell with them wogs" but it is at least recognizing that it was racially motivated. Rather than certain crimes in the U.S. that are racially motivated but not stated explicitly in the media.

I think they only considered it a hate crime because they mentioned his race:

A white guy doesn't really have to mention race for it to be considered a hate crime. The only person that needs to mention race in that case is the victims family. :D

Old Bailey judge Martin Stephens said the evidence did not show the attack was racially motivated.
