Well, OK, starting with DOS...
But it seems to me that DOS, through Windows 3.X, through 95+, through XP, has been handled a bit like a squatter shack... Wasn't built too well in the first place, and so problems had to be fixed. The fixes caused more problems. Which were fixed... Thus causing more problems.
It's my understanding that Windows is now really quite internally confusing. Please tell me I'm wrong. Because I use it. :p
Is it a legacy system because it's never been cost-effective to just scrap everything and start over? Or is that what they're doing with Vista? (It's sort of hard to get straight facts about Vista, given that writing about Vista is either "M$ IS SATAN" or "OMG IT WILL BE AWESOME I WANT TO GIVE BILL GATES A HANDJOB").

It's a hardware problem, not a software one
The reason we still don't have "USB-only" computers is because users (myself included) will raise hell if all our old and dependable peripherals are suddenly obsoleted
For example, I'm currently using a keyboard from 1992 because modern boards all have those wretched Windows-specific function keys which I fucking hate
Simply put, I'm not going to buy a new computer that won't let me use old keyboards

Is this a reference to this thread, or to the floppy thread? Or am I just a bit slow since I'm tired?

There will be adapters available if new computers don't include those peripherals.

You're missing the distinction between Windows 3.1/95 and Windows NT/XP. Despite the common name, they're completely different systems
The former has very serious legacy problems, while the latter does not
So the only legacy problems a typical XP Home user will encounter are hardware related

I've had problems with XP that seem to be related more to software... Driver issues, wierd uninstall stuff, etc.

WinXP is a dream compared to WinME, which is BY FAR the worst POS ever devised.

I remove those stupid keys.
Especially the windoze key, right as soon as I lost a very high level hardcore character in Diablo2, permenently slain because I accidentally hit that key during the middle of a fierce battle. After I returned from desktop, I saw that "I" was dead, and vowed to forever remove those keys and symbolically smash them with a forging hammer.

I sorta like those keys. I never accidentally hit them, for some reason... Or at least haven't in a long time. I don't see why 2 are needed, though, or why they're THERE.

And that's why I started using Linux. But I haven't totally replaced Windows with it, though.

Remember way back in the time of DOS, Win 3.0 and 3.1... those fucking sucked.

I remember playing some games in DOS... Some games needed to be booted up with a special disk to be played, heh heh.

Do you remember hacking the config.sys file ever? Reming it out so your memory stacker would work...

Oh, those windows keys. I bought a laptop last month - two start menu keys on the bottom row, and the spacebar is shortened to about an inch and a half to accomodate this! madness

I think I was taught how to do that, vaguely, but I'm not sure if I ever did.

Maybe they did, but 2000 and 98/98SE were far superior to ME...
Back in the old days what did you have to compare it with?;)
