View Full Version : Do you have a 'nickname'?

Do you? Or maybe you have more than one. What is it/are they? Do you like it or no?

Net usernames do not count of course, also nicknames you give yourself don't either.

Maybe you just get called names like 'skeazeball' or 'scumbucket' a lot. That counts.

Shanemac, I've been meaning to ask you, but it always slips my mind. So before it goes into the back of my mind again....some good friends have ancestors from Ireland. It is either Gilpin or O'Gilpin. And yet when they try to trace the ancestry seem unable to find anything about this family name.

I was just wondering if you had heard the name, is all. Seems like there is some type of family rumblings about the name being an assumed one because of the circumstances that caused the ancestor to leave Ireland. They all have red-hair, ruddy complexions, and blue-eyes. I'm sure that last bit of information helps. :D

Thanks, Shanemac. It is their big family mystery. They are definitely Irish, not English or Scots Irish. They are thinking that he was wanted by the English authorities for something that caused him to come over under an assumed name. I guess he came over in the 1860's or thereabouts.

Our families are close enough friends where I sit and wonder about it with them.

I got called Beans for a while at High School and actually my best friend, who moved here too, still calls me that. Beans, Beansy and what not. It was annoying because at the time, there was also this show (Mr. Beans) and they'd tease me, saying I was the female version. This is all because of my long Indian name that no one remembers (Bhinashini) - not even Indians themselves since my dad got creative with the name. :(

Another one is Sand. My folks call me Sand. Sandra is only a 6 letter word and they still manage to shorten it. The worse was someone calling S.

There was this humorous song that got a very small amount of airplay in the '80s (I think it was actually from the 70s) called "Pencil-Neck Geek." Due to it being played one day while we were drinking & getting stoned, and due to to my actually having a longer-than-average neck (which was a lot more visible back when I was a lanky teenager), I spent about a week being referred to as "Pencil-Neck Geek." I was not amused. After that, it got shortened to "The Neck," which I didn't care for at the time, but which I have grown rather fond of over the years (there are still one or two people who occassionally refer to me that way). My friend Dave likes to mispronounce words in whatever manner he imagines people from Europe might pronounce them, so to that end he still refers to me as "Neech," or "Das Neech." My nationalist tendencies briefly got me dubbed "Lt. Neck," but that never really took off.

I allow my sister and any other female who's smaller than me or unlikely to try and assert authority over me to call me by the pet form of my name. It sounds too patronising coming from anyone else.

Other than that I'm not the type to attract nicknames.

Penguins easily win over ducks any day of the week. But we had collected a lot of rubber ducks and duckie clothing for her, and one of her first words was "duck", actually "duck-a duck-a". :D
Problem was, she started calling every bird "duck", from Big Bird to pigeons in the street.
She's starting to catch on now, but she still calls them "duck", I swear, on purpose now, since she laughs her ass off at me when I yell "No! PENGUIN!!!!!"

At high-school I was known as \"Big Cheese\", \"Cheese\", and \"Cheeser\" because I allegedly had a cheesy-looking grin.

At my previous job I was nicknamed \"Satan\" because if you say my name out loud it sounds phonetically like \"Chris Satan\". I was also known as \"Hatebot\" because I used to use that as my handle when playing Day of Defeat and BF1942 on the work LAN.
