Kostunica Denied Kremlin Appointment

Dec. 01, 2005

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, who was willing to open in Moscow the Serbia's exhibition, counted on meeting President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin yesterday, November 30, 2005. Moscow cancelled the meeting at the very last moment displeased, perhaps, with persistent opposition of Serbia to extension of Russia’s economic presence in the country.
For Belgrade, the meeting of Serbian prime minister with Russia’s president was the obvious highlight of Kostunica’s tour to Moscow, the more so that the preliminary agreement was reached about two months ago. Kostunica planned to head for Moscow Monday but suddenly called off the visit - Moscow had never confirmed his appointment with Putin.

According to Serbian media, Putin didn’t embrace Kostunica’s intention to sell Electric Power Company, EPS, not to the Russian firms but to local oligarchs. Serbian authorities stepped in to prevent the sale of one of the country’s banks to Russia’s business. Moreover, Serbia is not at all eager to sell its major oil company, NIS, to Russia’s LUKOIL, favoring the local oligarchs again.

As I gathered from the press, the mentioned the 'local oligarchs' are close to the British government, and according to the Russian sources they intend to "break EPS into pieces and than buy its tinny bits."
