We're getting close to Jack/Anarch's final day of freedom, so I'm kicking off this thread in which you are encouraged to shake his hand firmly, hoist a tankard with him fondly, and get back any money you may have already lent him now, before he skedaddles off to national service.

Take care, Anarch. Try not to get shot by the enemy or buggered by your friends, and I'll see you soon.

Be assured this is the only time I will post anything with the British flag on it in a positive sense.

Good luck!

Hopefully your first active duty assignment will be rounding up moslems at Cronulla Beach and marching them off to ships for deportation.

ROFL. Thanks Il Ragno. I just returned from buying shit - men do not go shopping, men buy shit; shopping is a girl thing :D - with a friend who's already enlisted, to buy things I'll need for recruit training.

I had my 'going away' party last night, drank a hell of a lot of beer (four or five glasses of vodka and coke, about a case (24+ bottles) of beer, smoked about two and a half packs of cigarettes), it was ok, but not brilliant. I didn't feel tipsy or drunk or whatever. A few bad things messed up the night (a mate's bitch ex-/girlfriend turning up, some other stuff) so I'm kinda disappointed my life's about to take a massive turn and that's what I have.

Paradoxically it's added to my desire to escape from civilian life, though now I think about it there's a lot of things I'll miss. Listening to music nine out of ten waking hours, having coffee with Anna (a ex-mate's ex-girlfriend, functionally she's my little sister), drinking a beer at the pub with mates on a Friday night, reading a book at the park, discussing both highbrow and useless crap with you guys here, romancing Bip :D

I've gotta go get some sleep soon, so I'll leave it at this: good luck to y'all in whatever you do in life, regardless of how much of life remains for you, and I'll keep you all informed of life one way or another through recruit training... most likely being chunks of the letters I'm going to mail to Bip. I'll be back posting on weekends in late April.

As a buddy of mine once told me about the Navy, "They showed me all these brochures of exotic locales, and asked me where I wanted to serve and what job training I wanted to have........ Six months later I was painting the side of a ship with niggers hogging the radio."

Good luck.

Its tempting to say something jokey about what to avoid if you go the Middle East or whatnot, but it somehow doesn't seem appropriate. This is potentially serious business. I don't envy you.

But again, best of all possible luck.

Indeed. Doesn't the Australasian Province of the American Empire have knowledge of rum?

I drink rum as often as I drink beer. Vodka was my first drink. I'm actually capable of mixing vodka and coke such that it tastes good without being as overly sweet as rum is.

Do they produce rum domestically in Australia? Here in the United States, they have some rum that comes from Jamaica, but the overwhelming majority comes from Puerto Rico (technically a part of the USA).

Bundaberg Rum (sold in the US if I recall correctly) is quite popular here. Rum was the unofficial currency in the first British colony (Sydney). It's good.

What will happen is you'll change in the next year, Jack. Your priorities will change, your worldview, your overall desires, etc. When you come back, you won't be the same anymore, but your friends you left behind will be...and they probably won't "get it". When you look back, you won't miss this stuff anymore...you'll just reflect on it now and again and it will seem like it was a hundred years ago.

Mind you, I never ran off to join the legion, kill the Communists, or anything like that...but when I was about your age, I just left for while...and when I came back, I realized that I had changed, but everything, and everybody else had sort of just stayed the way they always were.

That is what becoming a man is...in a nutshell.

I wanted to join the army when I was about 15..... When it came to a meeting in my school and I couldn't open the door by myself I had to wise up, thankfully. :D
