Gary Glitter arrested in Vietnam (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4451992.stm)
Former glam rock star Gary Glitter has been arrested in Vietnam where police want to question him about alleged child sex offences.
The 61-year-old was detained at Ho Chi Minh airport as he tried to board a plane to Bangkok.
An immigration official recognised his name from a newspaper article, state-controlled media reported.
A newspaper reported that police were investigating Glitter over allegations of "obscene acts with a child".
Police said Glitter was allegedly involved with two girls under the age of 18, but declined to elaborate.
Glitter was held on Saturday and taken back to the Ba-Ria Vung Tau province where he had been living.
Reports suggest the singer, real name Paul Francis Gadd, fled his rented home there a week ago.
The seventies rock star, best known for hit single Rock and Roll (Part 2), has been living in Vung Tau since March 2005.
Jail penalty
Ministry spokesman Le Dung said authorities had interviewed a 15-year-old girl whom they found in Glitter's home, and a police manhunt for the rock star had reportedly been extended to the Vietnamese city Ho Chi Minh City.
"If evidence of a (legal) violation is found against Mr. Paul Francis, and especially evidence of sexual child abuse, I believe that very strict legal measures will apply to him," said Mr Le Dung.
Under Vietnamese law, the charge of obscene acts with a minor carries a penalty of one to five years in jail.
Earlier this week, the Foreign Ministry said officials had confirmed that Glitter had applied for permanent resident status in Vietnam.
Glitter was expelled from Cambodia in 2002, although no specific reason was given for his deportation.
He was convicted in the UK in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served two months in jail.

Old news, but i think the fact that he has not yet been publically flayed is a sign of weakness on the part of Vietnam

Since it is said that one of these girls was found in the old freak's house, that at least presents the possibility that the "sex acts" may have been consentual, that leads me to wonder what the hell is wrong with these girls. Is it just because he is an ancient washed up one hit wonder celebrity(jew)?
The first time I saw this guy I assumed he was a flaming homosexual.

Jailed Gary Glitter not so glam anymore (http://www.suntimes.com/output/rock/sho-sunday-gary04.html)
VUNG TAU, Vietnam -- On warm nights in this seaside resort, the elderly British foreigner would sing in his backyard -- sometimes for friends, sometimes alone, but always very loudly.
Once, Paul Francis Gadd, known widely by his stage name Gary Glitter, sang to millions as he pranced and strutted in his metallic jumpsuits as one of the shining stars during Britain's glam rock era of the 1970s. His pulsing "Rock and Roll (Parts 1 & 2)," with its booming single-word chorus of "hey," became a sports-crowd anthem that's still played endlessly in stadiums and arenas.
But Glitter, 61, has fallen a long way since his days as a larger than life pop icon, dogged by rumors of his predilection for very young girls since his conviction in London in 1999 for possessing child pornography.
He is now sitting in a Vietnamese prison as local authorities pursue allegations that he had sex with underage girls, including a 12-year-old.
Glitter was stopped by immigration police at the airport Nov. 19 as he tried to board a flight for Bangkok. Police had begun a manhunt for him a week earlier after he fled his ocean-view villa in the coastal resort city of Vung Tau.
On Nov. 25, Vietnamese prosecutors said police officials had gathered enough evidence of a possible crime to keep Glitter under detention for another three months while they proceed with a criminal investigation.
It is a big drop from his long-ago perch atop the charts.
"He was absolutely huge. He was one of the figureheads of the glam rock movement in Britain in the 70s. He was incredibly popular with young audiences," said Andrew Male, deputy editor of London-based Mojo music magazine.
With his bouffant black wigs, sequined lame jumpsuits, and silver platform heels, Glitter dominated the early to mid-70s with hits like "Leader of the Gang" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me," later covered by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
At the height of his fame, Gary Glitter had sold some 18 million albums.
But Glitter's musical career slowly faded as he became an unfashionable has-been by the 1990s. He lived off his past glory, and did occasional variety-show performances and quiz shows.
"He had become something of a tragic figure even before these stories hit the headlines," Male said.
Glitter's problems with the law began, Male recalled, when the rocker took his computer in for repair. "The images found there --that was the point when it was exposed and everyone was aware of it."
In 1999, Glitter was convicted of possessing thousands of images of child pornography and served half of a four-month sentence before he left England.
In December 2002, he was expelled from Cambodia, hounded out by child advocates and then-Minister for Women's Affairs Mu Sochua, who argued that his conviction in Britain was enough to bar him permanently.
"With these types of convictions and charges, we were deeply concerned that Cambodian children would be put at risk around this man," said Naly Pilorge, director of LICADHO, a Cambodian organization that supports human rights and deals with child trafficking issues. "Obviously, Vietnam has the same concerns."
Glitter has shown up in Vietnam three times since October 2003, according to police, most recently in April.
He rented a terra-cotta tiled villa with a swimming pool and an ocean view in Vung Tau, a sleepy seaside resort popular with Vietnamese as a weekend getaway from Ho Chi Minh City.
Few foreigners reside here, so Glitter, bald and burly, was quickly noticed. Neighbors said he was often seen bringing up to five or six girls in their mid-teens to his home. Laughter and loud talking at the pool could be heard over the high walls surrounding his villa, they said.
Vietnam does not have the reputation of Cambodia as a haven for sex tourism, but recent surveys by the government and the U.N. Children's Fund indicate that child prostitution, including child sex tourism, is on the rise, said Le Hong Loan, head of UNICEF Vietnam's child protection section.
"I think the case of Gary Glitter is a historic case for Vietnam so it can be more vigilant about the situation of sex tourism," Loan said. "Many people are unaware of the problem but because of [Glitter] and the media, more and more people are talking about it."
For the ex-rocker who sought to stay anonymous in Southeast Asia, notoriety proved his undoing.
"I hate the name Gary Glitter," he reportedly said after being caught at Tan Son Nhat airport by an immigration officer who had remembered articles about the former rock star. "It is too famous. Because of it, I draw so much attention."

'Glitter shared bed with girl, 11' (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uklatest/story/0,1271,-5468102,00.html)
Former British rocker Gary Glitter admitted to police that an 11-year-old girl slept in his bed, but denied sexually abusing her, his attorney said in Vietnam.
During interrogations by police, Glitter said he allowed the girl to sleep in his bed after she claimed she was afraid of ghosts, attorney Le Thanh Kinh said.
Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, is being held in Phuoc Co prison outside coastal Vung Tau city on suspicion of engaging in obscene acts with a child - a charge punishable by up to 12 years in prison.
He is being held amid allegations of having sex with several underage girls, including an 11-year-old and 12-year-old, at his rented seaside home in Vung Tau.
Glitter, who has denied all allegations, has not been formally charged. He has been held since November 19, when he was seized while trying to board a flight to Bangkok from Ho Chi Minh City.
During questioning by police, Glitter "answered that when this girl (and her aunt) came to his house, he put them in the guest room. But in the middle of night, they said they were very afraid of ghosts and they cannot sleep. So they came to his room and slept there," Kinh said, who added he was present during the sessions.
On another occasion, Glitter told them they could not sleep with him, but "the girls explained to him that in Vietnamese families, the father, the mother and the children sleep in one bed," Kinh said.
Police have interviewed six females, from 11 to 23 years of age, who alleged they had sex with Glitter.
He was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail term. He later went to Cambodia and was permanently expelled in 2002, but Cambodian officials did not specify any crime or file charges.

Are you sure he's a jew starr?
I have heard it somewhere, but I am not sure. That is why I put the question mark in there. I was hoping someone else would know.
This is an example of someone I would support executing.

This is an example of someone I would support executing.
So a guy who has sex with young girls, who are probably willing(disgusting, no doubt) is more deserving of death than someone who takes the lives of others?

He's repeatedly done this action despite society making it clear this is wrong. He has such a great likelihood of doing it again that he should be executed. Why does it seem that you still don't understand my viewpoint...

A large amount of criminals will reoffend again if given half the chance. Prison is like a revolving door for quite a few. If someone is caught for the first time(this also, of course does not mean they have not committed this, or similar crimes once, twice or many times before and just have not gotten busted until now) committing a violent act, what are you going to base your judgement on whether they are likely to reoffend again on? And when this person has served their time and appears to be "rehabilitated", would you want them to live next door to you?

Why do these socialist/former socialist nations allow him in? I remember that he initially went to Cuba, and these articles indicate that he has tried his pedophilia in Cambodia and now Vietnam.

Gary Glitter Gets Three Years (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/9421122/gary_glitter_gets_three_years)
Former British glam rocker Gary Glitter was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday for molesting two Vietnamese girls, ages 10 and 11, at his rented home in southern Vung Tau last year.
"I haven't done anything," the sixty-one-year-old Glitter (born Paul Francis Gadd) said after the verdict was read. "I'm innocent."
The judge, who condemned the rocker for "disgusting and sick" behavior, said Glitter would be deported to Britain after serving his sentence and must pay $320 to each girl's family in addition to court fees. Glitter was given the minimum sentence, after initially facing up to seven years of prison time, because of the $2000 "compensation" he paid to each girl's family in December.
Glitter, who scored his biggest U.S. hit in 1972 with "Rock & Roll Part 2," was convicted in Britain of possessing child pornography in 1999 and served two months of a four-month jail sentence. He later moved to Cambodia, where he was blacklisted in 2002 for undisclosed reasons.
Glitter has fifteen days to appeal the ruling.
