Look at post number 5. Third picture down at the top middle of it we see what seems to be a person's face as part of the smoke, crumbling building?

When I see these pictures it reminds me of the barbarity of the cetniks and the JNA and how could normal people in Monenegro and Serbia have just accepted this happening? I mean it is one thing to kill the 'enemy' but those pictures just show sheer attrocity. Should we be worried? This happened at the end of the 20th century in Europe, so is it possible or likely that something like this again could happen? I hope not.

Without any intention to go into what happened or not, I am only going to explain how come that the public accepted it.

The rise of Croatian separatism and the resurrection of Ustasha symbols and terminology were taken very badly and with negative emotions in Serbia&Montenegro public. At that war atmosphere when there was still JNA existing with its Yugoslav-communist symbols, and satanized Croatian forces on the other side, it was very easy for the public to accept what was served to it: "Croatian forces are firing at JNA from Dubrovnik and killing our soldiers, while hiding within civilian institutions and historical monuments, so we have to fire back. We are doing everything we can to avoid the destruction, but we are helpless."

They also told that many Serbian houses were burned and pictured, and that the thick black smoke is from burned automobile tires, again for media effect.

Now, I want to emphasise again that I am only stating what the public were told. And given the fact traditionally good Serbian-Croatian relationship from the past, it wasn't hard for them to accept it and sincerely believe it. Even until today.

Should we be worried? This happened at the end of the 20th century in Europe, so is it possible or likely that something like this again could happen? I hope not.

I too hope so.

The rise of Croatian separatism and the resurrection of Ustasha symbols and terminology were taken very badly and with negative emotions in Serbia&Montenegro public.

Croatian separatism was even legal by Yugoslavian constitution.
Ustasha symbols, such is "chessboard" as you call it predates Ustasha movement for some six centuries I believe?
It was even used in official coat of arms for Socialist Republic of Croatia 1963-1990. [link] (http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/y/yu)hr947.gif)
It was only mass hysteria and Greater Serbian propaganda machinery that made it exclusively Ustashian,
moreover it made everything with prefix Croatian Ustashian.

"Croatian forces are firing at JNA from Dubrovnik and killing our soldiers, while hiding within civilian institutions and historical monuments, so we have to fire back. We are doing everything we can to avoid the destruction, but we are helpless."

Yes, this was always explanation, from Vukovar, Sisak, Karlovac, Zadar, Sinj to Dubrovnik, even for isolated Catholic churches that were devastated all across Croatia.

Just for a note, in Dubrovnik’s case, Croatian positions and defense perimeter was actually located
at hill fort above the city, Srdj, which was key to the city and where the city was defended.

Taking positions in city it self which is surrounded by hills would be strategic meaningless and suicidal. Dubrovnik city it self was not military target.

View of Dubrovnik from Srdj (http://www.rit.edu/~axr0785/images/srdj.jpg)
View of Srdj from Dubrovnik (http://www.kroatienfotos.com/staedte/dubrovnik/dubrovnik%20(12).JPG)

Anyone reasonable and anyone who wish to know the truth could see behind the propaganda.
Thus it is wide impression that citizens of Serbia were familiar with this, but at the time (and today) saw nothing wrong with this.
Not one voice of reason was even raised from Serbian intellectual elite, who are also upholders of Dubrovnik's Serbian identity.

It was plain barbarism and envy, there are many other harsher words...

They also told that many Serbian houses were burned and pictured, and that the thick black smoke is from burned automobile tires, again for media effect.

I do not know about Serbian houses.
There was also "serious" news/information about thousands of well armed Ustashas
who have invaded Montenegro for that matter.

Thick black smoke is, as seen from the photos,
coming from harbored vessels, which were not torched by hand either
but were set a blaze with blast, which also can be seen from pic no4 in 1st post.

Now, I want to emphasise again that I am only stating what the public were told. And given the fact traditionally good Serbian-Croatian relationship from the past, it wasn't hard for them to accept it and sincerely believe it. Even until today.

Yes, as I already said from passage above, it really wasn't hard.

I too hope so.

Indeed, never again.

It is my feeling that I would have thought that at least in Montenegro people would have been more suspicious as traditionally there has never been no great hostilities between croats and montenegrins.

As for the media propaganda, I still think people could have seen through the hype and at least suspected that there was more sinister things happening, or maybe this is too much to ask from people from that region as they seem to take any media story 'hook, line, and sinker'.

Why does John Lennon death anniversary gets more coverage on our national TV than the attack on Dubrovnik anniversary does?

I'm going to go insane over this.

Yes once again the media is leading people astray - we see it not only with ridiculous political, social and economic decisions governments make but also by the nonsense that the media runs to air. It is all part of the campaign to destroy national identity and common sense values that all European peoples had subscribed to. Care for some hippy left-wing deadbeat who sung hopeless lyrics to dumb sounds. I believe I was born after his death so from my perspective this "John Lennon" is a typical 'looser' especially after proclaiming that the Beetles  were more popular than Jesus Christ. Looks like Jesus showed him
