Ontario has become the latest jurisdiction in Canada to pass legislation that makes it illegal to discriminate against workers on the basis of age.
The new law, which goes into effect next year, gives people the freedom to work as long as they want.
"Ending mandatory retirement is the right thing to do. It provides choice and removes discrimination in the workplace against older workers without undermining existing rights to pensions, early retirement and benefits plans," said Ontario Labour Minister Steve Peters in a news release.
"People are healthier and living longer so it is unfair to insist that they stop working simply because they turn 65. Ending mandatory retirement allows workers to decide when to retire based on lifestyle, circumstance and priorities."
However, critics say the decision means people will have to work longer to qualify for retirement benefits.
Mandatory retirement has already been lifted in Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
I agree with this. Mandatory retirement is simply stupid: It makes the workforce smaller and means there are more people who might not be providing an income for their own support.
