There are many rumors going around about my being fired as a Stormfront moderator. I'd like to set the record straight.
It was claimed that I refused to follow Don's rules. That is absolutely false. If I'm guilty of anything, it is following them too stringently. I enforced them to the letter, regardless of the poster. I didn't play favorites and many of my friends can vouch for that.
Until I got the PM that fired me, I hadn't had a direct communication with Don in many, many months. I hadn't heard from him that he was displeased with my moderating.
There are rumors that I had vendettas against certain posters. Granted, there are some that I don't like at all. However, as long as they didn't violate the rules, I ignored them.
Whenever I got a PM about something I moderated, I took the time to answer it. I also addressed posts about my moderating in the Complaint Thread. I had no problem explaining my actions to any poster that asked.
Now, I want to back up a bit. There is another moderator that I'll call GW. That isn't his initials, so he can stay anonymous. The first time I ever met him in person, the first thing he did was take me to the computer to show me that he had the highest rep count on SF. I'd never even looked at rep, so it didn't mean anything to me, but he was very proud.
Many months later, I got a phone call from him. I was about to pass his rep total. That was news to me. I didn't care. SF was never about being popular to me. It was about educating our people. The phone call went on and on. GW said that I shouldn't pass him because he had earned the top spot. Didn't that mean if I passed him, that I had earned it?
I eventually did and so have others, but our friendship was never the same. He no longer called to chat, only when he wanted to criticize something I had done.
He made it a point to periodically criticize my moderating (and JJT's, BTW) as "overmoderating." Never mind, that he consistently approved posts with profanity or epithets, a clear violation of the rules.
He told me and told others that he was going to have Don get rid of me. He went so far as to encourage others to report me to Don and got them to encourage others to do so, too. Thing is, not everybody fell for it and some forwarded that to me. But, his seed was planted and it grew. Apparently, it grew quite well.
I'd told others that my days at SF were numbered. I didn't know exactly when, but I knew that it would happen.
I got a PM from Don that he was firing me because of regular complaints, many from SMs. He also said that I was hard-deleting threads so that he couldn't see what I was doing. I explained that I was not deleting threads, that they showed up as removed if they were merged into an existing thread. He checked that and agreed that I was right. I wasn't hard-deleting threads.
I wasn't given the opportunity to see all those complaints or to offer my explanation for my actions.
Don never told me or any other moderator that I know of, that GW could make up his own rules and that we had to follow them. As mods, we answered to each other and to Don. We didn't go around reversing the decisions of other mods. We discussed disagreements. Not GW. He would unban temporarily banned posters, unmoderate posters that were moderated for good reason. He would never discuss it with the rest of us, he'd just do it. But, I got sacked for moderating according to Don's Guidelines for Posting.
I had hoped that there would be an official explanation to all of you, but since the threads are now closed, I don't see that happening.
Having said that, I hold no ill feelings toward Don. He was a gentleman and he thanked me for my years as a moderator. I don't feel the same about GW.
I want to thank all of you that showed your support for me. At a time like this, one learns who his true friends are. Thank you, all of you.
