Thanks in large part to the efforts of Ottawa's excellent Black goaltender, Ray Emery. That ends the quarterfinal series at 4 games to 1. Next opponent should be either New Jersey or the New York Rangers.

They were better. It's pretty simple. The Ottawa Senators were a better team in every aspect of this series. Bryan Murray was a better coach. Ray Emery was a better goaltender. Chris Kelly and Dean McAmmond were better third and fourth liners. Wade Redden and company were better blue-liners. Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza were a better "Big Three."
It happens.
But don't lose focus here.
The Penguins weren't meant to be this far along yet. Around New Year's we were talking about the Penguins just contending for the eighth seed maybe. But they challenged for the Atlantic Division title.
Evgeni Malkin wasn't supposed to be in this hemisphere. He had to sneak out of Europe literally to be here. And he got suplexed by John LeClair in his first preseason game. He pretty much has the Calder Trophy wrapped up.
Jordan Staal wasn't supposed to be here. He should be in Peterborough playing junior hockey. He ended up leading in shorthanded goals.
Some though Marc-Andre Fleury shouldn't have been here. Before the season started, some though Jocelyn Thibault should've started the season in net. Fleury ended up with 40 wins.
Erik Christensen should be in the minors. He ended up becoming a shootout demon.
Mark Recchi's hair shouldn't be here. Wait, it's not.
Josef Melichar should just not be here.
It was a good season that exceeded all expectations. Don't look at this as a disappointing end. It's not. It's a a beginning.

The Penguins could age very well if their roster is kept static, but that's unlikely to happen with not many on contracts longer than a few years. Their performance during the regular season was better than expected, though- they beat the Senators 3 times out of 4 after all and finished with the same number of season points as Ottawa.

Anyway (re: goalie comment before you edited), Emery was crucial to yesterday's game. The Penguins had a continuous power play that lasted for 5 out of the first 6 minutes, and had two separate two-man advantages, during which Emery made a good 7-8 saves. The Penguins statistically deserved one if not two goals out of that.

Awesome win by the Sens.

Thanks in large part to the efforts of Ottawa's excellent Black goaltender, Ray Emery.
Careful, you're gonna push Keystone to yet newer and more stratospheric levels of racism. :p

Is Keystein a hockey fan? I've always seen baseball and hockey devotion as mutually exclusive for some reason.

Compose my surface smooth as silk,
Cool like the ice I glide
Keep my anger inside, struggle to maintain my pride
When the stands spit slurs
That echo like gunshots, or slapshots off the boards with the hate in their words
I'm like "Gimme the puck!" I don't give a fuck
I know off the ice they pull you over for driving while Black
Sit your ass in the penalty box for that, doing overtime
Contemplating sudden death, yelling "Don't shoot!" while they take aim
To take away my last breath, tangled up in their net
Easily identified, even behind the white wire of a goalie mask
So I play the game mentally and physically braced for impact, see

The Penguins will sign a scoring winger, as they are in great need- Ryan Smyth perhaps? All of their top players- Crosby, Malkin, Staal, are natural centers that were forced into playing winger by default. As for the contracts, Ray Shero is a great GM and will find a way to keep the four together- Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury. Good luck in round 2. I will now pull for Henrik to win a Cup.

Me too.

I think it is different in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, those places seem to be pretty all-round sports cities. They're American cities that have been hockey powerhouses at different periods of history.

Keystein (I actually preferred Julian's Keybone, although I like him) has mentioned the Penguins on several occasions so I assume he follows them (although there is not much for him to follow now, at least until next fall :222:)

I'll don't follow them much since Le Greedy One shopped the Penguins to not one, but two potential buyers who had every intention of moving the team.

I had been following the Pens since the blue and white sweaters and the Century Line.

Pittsburgh never really had the chance to test Emery except in the 1st period when they had a 2 man advantage. But that was mostly great work by Phillips and Alfredsson. The Sens D didn't leave many open lanes for Sidney Crosby and Co.; I think that was the difference in the series.

Fleury was facing over 30 shots a night. I'm not going to say anything bad about Emery, he's a good goalie, but he was barely facing 20 shots a game in the series. That will change as the playoff progresses.

The Pens didn't have many scoring chances and a lot of that credit must go to the Sens D for that.

FYI a black goaltender won the Cup before,so you don't need to single Emery out for being black.

Heh, I remember reading about him getting arrested for drunk driving or something last year.

I actually heard an interview with him the other day and he sounded perfectly articulate, moreso than the average hockey player I'd say. I've always found that multigenerational Afro-Canadians, who don't come from the Caribbean or the US, are usually very assimilated and speak coherently.

5-4 for Ottawa against New Jersey tonight, close one, even though they were ahead 4-0 in the first period.

Elias did not play. I am still picking the Devils in 6. Lame for him to miss game due to a cold. This is Stanley Cup playoffs- anything short of death is a bad reason not to play.
