An interesting article here from Aljazeera Magazine about the current situation in Afghanistan. Surprisingly [sic], it’s not quite as rosy as what the “Canadian” media in particular, report.

Afghanistan : NATO and U.S. forces losing ground

More than five years after the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan that ousted the Taliban regime, Afghans say their lives have become more insecure.

“We have more bloodshed, more poverty and more grievances than during the Taliban’s time,” Haji Agha, a resident of Lashkargah, the provincial capital, told IRIN.

Taliban military chief Mullah Dadullah has been quoted recently as saying that thousands of Taliban fighters have been deployed across Afghanistan and are preparing to attack occupation bases as well as the puppet Afghan Government.

[…]

Over 4,000 people, a quarter of them civilians, according to Reuters, were killed last year.

Speaking to Commons committee, U.S. scholar Barnett Rubin and Gordon Smith painted a bleak image for the situation in Afghanistan.

Their remarks as well as remarks by Mullah Dadullah contradicted a statement made a few days earlier by Canada’s top military commander, Gen. Rick Hillier, who claimed that great progress is being made in Afghanistan.

[…]

“We have sent thousands of Taliban fighters to all Afghan cities for attacks on foreign troops and their Afghan puppets,” Dadullah said.

“We will turn our motherland into the graveyard of the U.S. forces and their families should wait for their dead bodies.”

“The Taliban’s war is only for the freedom of Afghanistan from the enemies of Muslims.”

Harper salutes troops at 'red rally' outside Camp Petawawa
May 11, 2007 11:09 AM

Canadian Press
PETAWAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper told an audience of military families today that his political opponents are drowning out the accomplishments of Canada’s soldiers in Afghanistan.

Their military heroism, Harper said today, has been overshadowed by attacks over the handling of prisoners turned over to the Afghani government.

Attending a weekly Support the Troops rally at this military community north of Ottawa, Harper rebuked political foes who have been hammering the government for weeks on the detainee issue.

“Nine soldiers from Petawawa were honoured (last month) for their work in Afghanistan — but sadly the attention has not been on them,” he said.

“Those soldiers did not receive the attention they deserved because their story has been eclipsed by quarrels in the House of Commons with respect to allegations about detainees.

“I sincerely hope their story will come to light when the Governor General officially gives them their decorations.”

[...]

About 1,000 people stood under a light drizzle to take in the rally in a parking lot outside a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

There were military spouses and children in strollers, hundreds of soldiers in their olive fatigue uniforms, and hundreds more family members dressed in red.

An 11-year-old boy whose father is stationed in Kandahar held up a sign with his friends that said, “Support the troops.” :canuck:

Just another day in Soviet Canuckistan. :canuck:
