How does WWIIOL work when one team is away, and the other is online? I mean, it must be shitty to wake up and find out that the enemy managed to capture some important objective because they were the only people there.

Its just one massive server and we have thousands online at any time of the day. No lack of fighting at any time and the great thing is that alot of higher strategy is in there. I have been with this game for already four years and I still have no rank to fly the cooler airplanes or even spawn a Destroyer or Merchant Ship. Why? Because I love to play Inf grunt. But I tell you its daunting to be part of this game as you truly understand the concept of "cannon fodder". You are there with your rifle trying to storm that farm house under a smoke screen of your squadmates of the same Infantry brigade, supported by some Assault gun from the neigboring outfit while over you the boys of the KG56 are flying totally oblivious to your fight down there 5000 meters bellow in their He-111 from Köln all the way to bomb the british factories in Canterbury. Mind you, one hour flight. They will be joined over Antwerp by the guys of the JG54 in their newly researched Bf-109F4s in their flight to the British Islands.

The scope of this game is just inmense and a player led HQ is there to guide you.

My damn problem is that the computer that's half-decent for gaming has a shitty internet connection. Anybody who's ever had an IM convo with me knows of what I speak.

I mean, hell, my new PC is going to be amazing, the weakeast points will be a "mere" GeForce 6800GT 256MB PCIEx16 graphics card and a "tiny" 250GB HD... AND IT PROBABLY WON'T HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION FOR GAMING.

If it ever bloody works, I'll play WWIIOL, k? Of course, by that point I will probably be in university. And that's when I'll end up flunking because, well, an exam is an exam... But the Americans are marching on Antwerp! Priorities! :p

I would prefer a more mundane existence as Lieutenant Lipshitz, where I could logon and brave the warrooms of SHAEF retrieving cups of coffee for Ike.

But seriously wwiionline sounds awesome. I had no idea they had ships.

I'd like to man some sort of FlaK battery, like 20mm quad, 88mm or 128mm FlaK. Estimate the range to target and set the fuse appropriately, sonny.

The non existent rangefinding system on arcade style gaimes is irritating.

Heh..well..actually we do have while playing Axis the famed 88, a Bofors AA gun with its 40 mm rounds and then a lighter Flak 30 gun. Since we do have RDP wars going on where each side has its dedicaded Strategic Bomber Wing Command trying to stop or delay the enemies research, production and introduction of new and existing equipment, so have also sprung up dedicated Flak Battery squads and also home defense fighter squadrons that try to shoot down these raids. Closer to the front we also set up what we call Flak Traps of several Flak guns so that when our own CAS planes need their tails cleared from enemy fighters they just fly over such places and we shoot them down. Very funny and rewarding since us groundpounders suffer hell from enemy CAS too.

The axis uses a Bofors 40mm? That was used by the allies. and no 20mm quad? :( The Bofors 40mm quad would be badass though.

Is the time period supposed to be around 1942 or so with regard to equipment?

Germans had historically big amounts of the Bofors gun. I thought they had not but when researched it came out the other way.
Game starts in May 1940 with the Germans just crossing the Meuse river and begining their run towards the channel. Of course the human allied HC is not so stupid as its 1940 counterpart and a single campaign (till one side is declared winner) can take months to finish. It takes some time to take those 700 plus towns.

As the game starts in 1940, research kicks in after that date. Some semblance of balance needs to get mantained in game and so several equipment pieces are not modeled unless the other side has something similar. One of these situations would be german Self propelled Anti air guns. Germans had tonns of these and put them to great use during the campaign. Yet the allied lack something comparable for 1940. Thus SPAA will only get modeled starting in 1942 or something when the allies brought similar equipment to use.

I've been wanting to play it for years, but can never find it in local gamestores.

I have a Geforce 6600, a crapload a ram, can stick with a game regardless of learning curve (like Hearts of Iron), of course I will play axis (Heil Hitler!!!!!)

Anyway, try EBgames or stores like that. I found a EBgames near me that was selling at least 8 copies of the CD version for 2 bucks each. And a year before that i found a copy at some videogames superstore on a clearence desk for something like 4 bucks.
