MOSCOW, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Russia has formally handed over one of two last military bases in Georgia to Tbilisi, news agencies reported Wednesday.

It indicated a new step towards the full pullout of Russian military bases from the former soviet country.

Senior defense officers from the two countries inked an act of acceptance of the base, known as the 62nd military base in Akhalkalaki, in the Georgian Defense Ministry, Interfax and RIA news agencies said.

Georgia has said the location of the 15,000-man military complex, founded in 1910, is strategically important.

Russia inherited four military bases in Georgia from the Soviet Union and has withdrawn two of them. The two countries have agreed to complete the phased withdrawal of Russian bases and other military installations in Georgia by the end of 2008.

No news however of the USA leaving its bases in Germany and Japan. I even suspect them of bribing their way to get some Georgian bases as well.

Sad but true :(. The US will NEVER give up their bases in Japan or Germany, at least not as long as they are able to defend them and utilize them for their imperialist objectives. The situation with Georgia is sad in that they're using Georgia's vulnerability to A) exploit the country by flooding it with foreign capital rendering it at the whim of corporate interests - not for the benefit of Georgian interests; B) using Georgia as a pawn to counter Russian interests in the region, and C) Georgia is stuck in the middle between the economic interests of both Russia and the United States for its resources, Black Sea ports, and access to valuable gas-lines. Like I said before, Saakashvili is mistaken to turn his country over to the NATO position - it's only alienating relations with Russia - a far more important relationship for the future well-being of Georgia than the United States could ever offer - but then again the National Movement - Democrats (Saakashvili's party) are on the payroll of George Soros.
