A recent goverment study shows "alarming" trends amongst the population that claims:

59.6% of the population feel there are to many inmigrants in the country.
84.7% Would only allow extra comunitarians with a work permit in the country.
79% Would like to see the inmigrant thrown out at the first crime he/she commits.
40% would hate to live near a Gipsy.

Its not terrible numbers for a European country these days, if that was in Sweden you can be sure the numbers would be lower. I've a lot of faith in Spain and especially Italy in preserving something of Europe when the rest of the place collapses.

In Portugal about seventy-five percent of the people are frustrated with the nation's lax immigration. Does that mean we are more xenophobic than our Iberian neighbours? I always thought Portugal was the more "liberal"/left-wing but ah well. :D It's good to know the majority of Iberians aren't stupid. In Canada I think we are aware of this as well. In the Globe and Mail only 33% said Carribbean immigrants were useful to society, 45% South Asian immigrants, 59% North-East Asian and 76% European (usually the euros that come here now are eastern european so that probably affected it)

40% are those who are openly against it, like you coulod not dragg them with two Ochens there. That is not to say the remaining 60% would be happy with it.

Guys, 60% saying "there are to many of them" is VERY significant. Moreso when many people do not answer with their heart such questionaires out of some irrational fear that it will get them later on.
