Who was the greatest monarch of the Middle Ages? Trying to generate some discussion here.

Not technically a monarch, but I'd say Charles Martel.

Radbod the Frisian

Radbod, king of the Frisians

While Aldegisel had welcomed Christianity into his realm, Redbod attempted to extirpate Christianity and to free the Frisians from subjucation to the Frankish Merovingian dynasty. Radbod was, however, defeated by Pippin of Herstal in the battle of Dorestad (689), and was compelled to cede West Frisia (Frisia Citerior, "Nearer Frisia" from the Scheldt to the Zuider Zee) to the Franks.

Between 690 and 692 CE Utrecht also fell into the hands of Pipin. This gave the Franks control of the important gateways of trade from the Frankish hinterland to the North Sea via the river Rhine. Following his defeat, Radbod retreated in AD 697 to the then single island of Heligoland.

On Pippin's death in 714 Radbod took the initiative again. He forced Saint Willibrord and his monks to flee, and advanced as far as Cologne, where he defeated Charles Martel, Pippin's natural son in 716.

Radbod and Christianity
During the second journey of Saint Boniface to Rome, Wulfram is said to have preached in Frisia. He tried to convert Radbod, but not succeeding he returned to Fontanelle. Legend has it that Radbod nearly chose baptism, but refused as he would prefer to spend eternity with his pagan ancestors (who he had been told he would be separated from if he converted to Christianity) than a few souls in heaven.

Runner up: Haakon the Good

After the collapse of the Empire in the west, Christianity became useful to ambitious kings in the northern nations. Very few Norse kings were as honorable as Hakon the Good (note the appreciative epithet) of Norway, who, although a Christian in his youth, renounced the alien cult rather than impose it on his subjects.

In the end, his little rebellion got crushed, and his foe Charles Martel ended up saving Europe, and securing its future. Moral of the story: the Hammer of God is the biggest hero in Europe's history, Radbod the infidel is forgotten by nearly everyone ;).

You have got to be kidding me.

He may be released as soon as April '06 on probation, but we shall see. Anyway, it shouldn't be much longer.
