LONDON (AFP) - Women see masculine-looking men as more unsuitable long-term partners but men with more feminine features are seen as more committed and less likely to stray, researchers said Wednesday.

Scientists at the universities of Durham and St Andrews came to the conclusion by asking more than 400 British men and women to make judgments on character after looking at digitally-altered pictures of men's faces.
The web-based test asked participants to rate the face for traits such as dominance, ambition, wealth, faithfulness, commitment, parenting skills, and warmth.

Men with square jaws, larger noses and smaller eyes were classed as significantly more dominant, less faithful, worse parents and as having less warm personalities.
ial features, fuller lips, wide eyes and thinner, more curved eyebrows on the other hand were viewed as a better bet for long-term relationships.
And healthier-looking faces, for example those with better complexions, were seen as more desirable in terms of all personality traits compared to those who looked unhealthy.
Older faces were also generally viewed more positively compared to younger ones.
The scientists said there was a "high amount of agreement" between women about what they see in terms of personality when seeing a man's face and they may well use their impression to decide whether or not to engage with him.
"That decision-making process all depends on what a woman is looking for in a relationship at that time of her life," said Lynda Boothroyd, from Durham Universitys Department of Psychology.

Her colleague, David Perrett from St Andrews, said: "Our results contradict claims that machismo denotes fitness and disease immunity. Masculinity may buy you dominance but not necessarily tip top physical condition.
"Instead women see a healthy guy as the source of wealth, and fit for family life."

The research is published in the latest edition of the journal "Personality and Individual Differences".

They want to fuck the more masculine looking ones though.

They just don't want them as the meal ticket.

This is a good example of the conscience of the mind and the conscience of the soul coming into conflict. The modern mentality is that of money and success while instincts still look for a male who is confident and able to defend his family and space.

What women say has to be taken into context with what they actually do. For example, Asian men have the least masculine features, yet they have the hardest time finding women outside of their race who are interested in marriage. In the U.S., Asian women with white husbands are three times more prevalent than Asian men with white wives. Likewise, Asian women are six times more likely to have black husbands than are Asian men to have black wives.

You're not the only person who didn't get laid in high school, and just 'cause you didn't, that doesn't mean all women are bad.

The conclusion the researchers take is funny since its so very PC. Using evolution you can reach any conclusion you want. I would personaly bet on the "meal ticket" theory.

The more masculine looking ones are more exciting and attractive on a sexual level as they have that bad ass appeal, I suppose. But thinking long term, a woman is going to want a man who she sees as more stable, mature and ready to settle down. These last few things are at least as important if not more than the money factor. The money factor, alone, won't get you very far if the guy dumps you early in the relationship. I also think that sometimes people miss the fact that women, though they like a financially secure man, can also be intimidated by it, since the guy, if he has too much money, also is seen as likely to have a greater number of options, and woman are jealous. It also comes with an "I can get any woman I want" attitude. I suspect that guys feel similar about very beautiful women.

Money and time were actually wasted studying this?

I suspect a lot of women think that a better a man looks (and knows he looks), the more likely he will be a playboy. I think in a lot of cases that is true, at least by my experience.
