BERLIN -- The first privately-funded Jewish cultural center in Germany since the Holocaust will open this week as a symbol of the rebirth of Jewish life in the country, organizers said Monday.
The 5-million-euro ($6.8-million) center, which, like nearly all Jewish institutions in Germany, will have round-the-clock police protection, is run by the Orthodox Chabad-Lubavitch movement - a branch of Hasidism.

As you yourself quoted, it's privately funded. The five million euros aren't for the Jewish community, they are from them.

What's that supposed to mean? I think the police forces may find themselves a bit overstretched trying to provide special protection for 80 million people.

It is however a bit troubling that the Chabad Lubavitchers are the first to open such a centre, when they are (from what I have read) some of the most chauvinistic in their attitudes towards Gentiles of the different streams of Judaism.

If what you have heard is correct than what is also troubling is the difference in reaction. Imagine if a very "intolerant" christian organization were to open up a community center, funded by regular Christians. or even somewhat similarly applicable, a center opened up that was going to be operated by white racists. The former might be allowed, but not without a lot of bitching, the latter most definitely would not. The tone of this article, though, and very likely any other article from a mainstream source, on this subject, is completely positive.
