Tsoi was born on Midsummer's Day 1962, in Leningrad, to a Korean father and Russian mother. He was one of the pioneers of Russian rock, with his band Kino.
He began writing songs at the age of 17. His early songs discussed themes like life on the streets of Leningrad, love and hanging out with friends. Many heroes in his songs were young men with limited opportunities trying to survive in a tough world.
Tsoi was expelled from the Sartov Artistic Academy at 18 for poor work.
His musical career saw rock music grow from an underground fringe movement only in the sleazy Westernized city of Leningrad to mainstream success, via government patronage. Kino became very popular, moving from opposition of government policies (nuclear escalation, the Afghan war etc.) and being suppressed, to major acceptance under Gorbachev. In the late 80s Kino toured the USA. The apex of the band's career was a concert for an audience of 68,000 in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in 1990. Sadly Tsoi was mangled to death in a vioent car crash between Riga and Leningrad in August of that year. During his success he continued his work maintaining the heating system of an apartment block.
Before making it big, Tsoi said that the problem with music was that no one wanted to take chances. He wanted to experiment with lyrics and music in order to create something fresh that no one had ever heard before.
Tsoi means more to the young people of our nation than any politician, celebrity or writer. This is because Tsoi never lied and never sold out. He was and remains himself. You can't not believe him... Tsoi is the only rocker who has no difference between his image and his real life, he lived the way he sang... Tsoi is the last hero of rock.
Following Tsoi's death, more than 65 adolescents all over the Soviet Union committed suicide, because they believed their life lost its meaning without their cultural hero.
Kino remains famous and popular in the former Soviet Union.
