Results of the "WalletTest.com" Experiment:

http://www.wallettest.com/Lost_Wallet_Test/Results_Page.html

100 wallets were dropped in front of hidden cameras to see who would return the wallets and who would steal them...

General Test Results:

Of all 100 people tested:

74% were honest and
returned the wallets.

26% were dishonest and
kept the wallets.

Summary: The good news is that most
people were honest - in fact, honest people
out numbered dishonest people nearly 3 to 1.

Gender Specific Test Results:

Of the 100 people tested -
51 were female and
49 were male:

Of the 51 females tested:
86% (44) were honest and returned the wallets.
14% (7) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 49 males tested:
61% (30) were honest and returned the wallets.
39% (19) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Note: It was not the intention of this experiment to make any particular group look bad, reinforce stereotypes nor to further a hidden agenda of any kind. The actions of a few members in a group should not, of course, be used to judge the whole group.

Comparing both Race and Gender at the same time:

Of the 37 "White Females" tested:
95% (35) were honest and returned the wallets.
5% (2) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 14 "Black Females" tested:
64% (9) were honest and returned the wallets.
36% (5) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 40 "White Males" tested:
65% (26) were honest and returned the wallets.
35% (14) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 9 "Black Males" tested:
44% (4) were honest and returned the wallets.
56% (5) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Note: It was not the intention of this experiment to make any particular group look bad, reinforce stereotypes nor to further a hidden agenda of any kind. The actions of a few members in a group should not, of course, be used to judge the whole group.

Comparing both Race and Age at the same time:

Of the 24 "Young White People" tested:
62% (15) were honest and returned the wallets.
38% (9) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 10 "Young Black People" tested:
40% (4) were honest and returned the wallets.
60% (6) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 30 "Middle-Aged White People" tested:
83% (25) were honest and returned the wallets.
17% (5) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 12 "Middle-Aged Black People" tested:
75% (9) were honest and returned the wallets.
25% (3) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 23 "Old White People" tested:
91% (21) were honest and returned the wallets.
9% (2) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

(NOTE: "Old Black People" could not be reliably tested because there was only one person who was both "Black" and "Old". Just one person is, of course, way too small of a sampling for a meaningful evaluation. The one "Old Black" who was tested was dishonest and kept the wallet.)

Note: It was not the intention of this experiment to make any particular group look bad, reinforce stereotypes nor to further a hidden agenda of any kind. The actions of a few members in a group should not, of course, be used to judge the whole group.

Racially Specific Test Results:

Of the 100 people tested -
77 were white and
23 were black:

White People:
Of the 77 white people tested:
79% (61) were honest and returned the wallets.
21% (16) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Black People:
Of the 23 black people tested:
57% (13) were honest and returned the wallets.
43% (10) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Note: It was not the intention of this experiment to make any particular group look bad, reinforce stereotypes nor to further a hidden agenda of any kind. The actions of a few members in a group should not, of course, be used to judge the whole group.

Comparing both Age and Gender at the same time:

Of the 22 "Young Males" tested:
41% (9) were honest and returned the wallets.
59% (13) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 12 "Young Females" tested:
83% (10) were honest and returned the wallets.
17% (2) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 14 "Middle-Aged Males" tested:
71% (10) were honest and returned the wallets.
29% (4) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 28 "Middle-Aged Females" tested:
86% (24) were honest and returned the wallets.
14% (4) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 13 "Old Males" tested:
85% (11) were honest and returned the wallets.
15% (2) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Of the 11 "Old Females" tested:
91% (10) were honest and returned the wallets.
9% (1) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

Note: It was not the intention of this experiment to make any particular group look bad, reinforce stereotypes nor to further a hidden agenda of any kind. The actions of a few members in a group should not, of course, be used to judge the whole group.

I don't think they put enough disclaimers in there.

Honesty is positively correlated with being female, older, and white.

A more interesting analysis is to rework the data with the question 'if they were dishonest, what is the probability they were black?' There were two dishonest white women, for example, among a known seven dishonest women. There were 37 white women in the sample, vs. 51 women total.

All these 'marginal total' questions merit, from an analytical standpoint, checking the converse of the point being made. I've found that in newspaper articles, when they provide sufficient data to do the analysis, the real story is invariable the other one.

The sample size is too small to have any real meaning.

No way would 44% of nigger bucks in the general population return a wallet they found.

Yeah, that figure seems a little high, to say the least. The true figure is probably around 12%. They probably conducted their experiment in an area where they sampled Blacks who were mainly university graduates with middle class-type jobs (in fairness, Black men would probably be more likely to return a wallet to someone who was Black and/or an attractive female). The fact that aspect of the methodology was not referenced, leads me to suspect a lot of these wallets had Black and/or cute female IDs placed in them, in order to elicit better behavior from the Buck Nigger Brigade.

What was in the wallets? I'd return a wallet that only had a small amount of cash in it in the hope of getting a reward, or just so that I could look good. If it had hundreds of dollars in it and looked like it belonged to a rich guy, I'd keep the cash. Bad experiment!

All of the numbers are too high for me to truly believe. 95% of white females? That is much too high to believe this would reflect any trends in the general population. People seem too dishonest and selfish today, for these numbers to be as high as they are. I am not so sure, that I, myself, would give the wallet back. I would like to say I would, but upon actually finding the money, I might not. looking through the other contents of the wallet you might be able to get a feel for certain things about the person. If they seemed to be wealthy I probably wouldn't care too much about giving the money back, though, you might get some kind of reward. If the person seemed poor, I would feel a little more guilt since that money that I probably wouldn't be in desperate need of could be true of them. A reward would most likely be out of the question in this case.

They managed to drop wallets in an area that was exclusively black and white?
Or were they aiming for those 2 demographics? Why?
Or were Latino thieves (assuming all Latinos would keep the wallet :bandito:) categorized as white a la federal crime stats?

I would like to see a study like this conducted strictly on average, middle class types of people. The money should be a decent amount, but nothing too extravagant. The kind of people who would look at the money is just like a nice extra. Not something they need nor something that is like nothing to them. With the wallets containing no pictures(possibly an ID with a very average looking person might be ok) or much other information besides what would be necessary to return the wallet. Nothing that could possibly sway them in either direction rather than how honest they are.

Another interesting racial one would be to drop wallets with pictures of an average looking white person in a black area and vice versa and then drop the white wallets in a white neighborhood and the black wallets in a black neighborhood and compare those results. Would whites be more likely to return a black person's wallet than a black person would be likely to return the wallets of a white person? I definitely believe so. And would both be more likely to return wallets to people who are of their race?

Of the 9 "Black Males" tested:
44% (4) were honest and returned the wallets.
56% (5) were dishonest and kept the wallets.

This generally repeats itself in crime stats as well.
