This thread is to propose topics for formal debate. If you don't have an opponent, you can post your desired topic here and see if anybody takes you up on it.

I'm open to a big debate on a couple of issues:
1. The Spanish Civil War
2. An examination of the premises of 'racialism' by a comparison of Latin America and Southern Europe
3. The claims of the Nazis regarding an imminent Soviet invasion of Europe

Not going to debate this one but my best friend in college and current partner in a startup, a Russian jew assured me (he can actually read Russian documents, and few people from outside Eastern Europe know Russian) that he thought Stalin planned to attack in 1942.
Hitler should have let them do it, the Russian army would have been completely wiped out if it went on the offensive, invading Russia without destroying the opposition has bad logistical problems.

What aspect of the Spanish Civil War would you like to debate about?

Good question. I'm open to a lot of different topics related to it. Some interesting stuff could be:
1. The Soviet betrayal of the Republicans
2. The relative merits of the Nationalists vs. The Republicans
3. The distinct nature of both or either Republican socialism and Nationalist fascism, from the nations considered to be the standard bearers of these respective ideologies
Or if you have any topics on the issue you'd like to debate, throw them out there.

What do you mean? Plenty of people outside Eastern Europe know Russian. People outside Eastern Europe do plenty of research on the history and culture of Russia which requires a more than working knowledge of the language. It's a common major at universities. It was the official language of the major enemy of the United States for half a century.

You're the Latin afficianado here, not I. Why don't you posit the claim, and I'll respond as best I can. I'm not going to tell you what to include within the scope of your own essay, but I'd prefer 2) or 3), personally. As I have indicated before, I don't really consider Franco's Nationalist movement to represent a genuinely Fascist tendency...I suppose that warrants discussion as well.

I'd be interested in debating with socialists as well as all interested the causes and details of the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
