More skilled migrants will lift economy, but there's a catch, analysts say (http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/more-skilled-migrants-will-lift-economy-but-theres-a-catch/2006/01/16/1137260004193.html)

BOOSTING skilled immigration will create a more powerful economy and make people richer on average, the Government's leading agency for economic analysis says.

But the Productivity Commission says there is a catch: little, if any, of those higher wages will be received by Australian-born workers. "It's probably true that the gains are largely snaffled by the migrants themselves," said a commissioner, Judith Sloan.

The commission's draft report, Economic Impacts of Migration and Population Growth, published today, comes after the Government increased the immigration intake by 20,000 this financial year. This will take the non-humanitarian tally to about 140,000, the highest in at least 40 years. The Premier, Morris Iemma, has quietly dropped the anti-immigration stance of the former premier Bob Carr, including his refrain that "Sydney is full".

The immigration figures mask a steep rise in the number of temporary business immigrants; in 2003-4 there were 360,000 of them, double the number of eight years earlier. Sydney has received the bulk of temporary migrants but has also suffered most from the loss of educated young workers who go overseas.

The migrant intake has more than doubled since 1999-2000.

Skilled migrants have risen from 29 per cent of the program to 70 per cent this financial year.

The report shows the likely effects over 20 years of the Government increasing the current intake of skilled migrants by 50 per cent. In the commission's modelling, the economy would be 3.5 per cent higher than it otherwise would by 2024-5, and average incomes would be $335 higher.

Higher numbers of skilled migrants would add competition to the professional jobs market, leading to professional wages falling more than 5 per cent. But tradespeople, labourers, transport workers and production workers could see wages increase slightly, as new migrants add demand in areas such as housing construction.

The economy would be boosted by higher employment and higher consumption, offset by a temporary fall in the terms of trade (or ratio of export prices to import prices). The report concludes that immigration has a "neutral to mildly positive" effect on overall living standards. "It tells you that migration policy is not an economic lever and you wouldn't use it as such," Professor Sloan said.

Britain and China were by far the top two sources of migrants in 2004, followed by New Zealand and India.

This is just a excuse by certian people to flood there Nation with more non-Whites. Why not just take Whites citizens of the Nation and put them though state Trade training instead. Thus up lifting your economy using the White natives of your Nation.

I'm all in favour of that. Actually, I'd go further: outright deportation of non-assimilable/assimilated communities, and an almost open border policy relating to white Anglo-Saxons/Celts worldwide, combined with the seperation of high schools into academic schools and trade schools (we used to have this, the high school I went to was formerly a trade school, but still a fair chunk of the kids there were what we called 'tradies').

Only Anglosaxons, or other Europeans too?

That is the obvious fallacy in the "we need immigrants for the economy!" argument.

Only Anglos and Celts? Even if Australia adopted the old White Australian Policy (which included all euros) they still wouldn't be getting many numbers except for maybe eastern euros. :D Europeans right now don't seem interested in leaving and I don't blame them. They have similar problems of their own to deal with. The west is pretty much screwed when the baby boomers hit seniority.

Predominantly Anglo-Saxons/Anglo-Celts (though Dutch, Germans, white French etc. would be accepted provided they made a solid effort to assimilate). Btw, not all Anglo-Saxons are Europeans :p I would generally count white Americans who have assimilated well into the Anglo-Saxon core culture as Anglo-Saxons.

I would also put Australia on a gold standard, institute protectionism, boost funding and recruitment for the military and a nuclear weapons program, annex New Zealand, covertly stir up problems in South Africa and then turn it into a protectorate while carving it up into little homelands for the blacks, with full citizen priveliges for Boers and Anglo-Saxon South Africans, and create a treaty wherein the new Southern British Empire would have full rights over South Africa's mineral deposits in exchange for turning the various tribal black homelands into protectorates (while we slip contraceptives into their foods, of course). And then build up the Royal Australian Navy and sieze control of Indonesian oil fields and begin refining our own oil in Australia... rather than sending it overseas for processing, only to buy it again.

I like the sound of your designs on South Africa, but you can keep your grasping hands of NZ. :nono: At the very least, it should be couched in terms of "Anschluss with Australia" rather than "annexation" :D

I'm sure we'll portray it as the final unification of Australia and New Zealand as NZ was supposed to join us back at Federation in 1901. Hence they do not have a constitution proper, because our one was written for them too. We can 'fix' this problem by landing a few thousand troops in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. Serves them right for going dodgy on the ANZUS treaty :D

A Commonwealth free trade agreement is actually a possibility within the next ten years or so, and from this greater ties on the whole may be advanced through practical initiatives outside a revolutionary context - got to love the term Southern British Empire though.

"I'll take 'Polite ways to say parasitic, for $400, please'" - anyone here watch "Wheel of Fortune"?
