For the metrician in all of us:

http://www.criticsrant.com/bb/reading_level.aspx

Some intriguing results:

My Blog - College Level (Undergraduate)

http://blog.occidentaldissent.com - High School Level

http://www.originaldissent.com/forums/index.php - Junior High (well, it's an index page)

My other blog - Elementary School (hey! It discussed Blackstone's Law and Latin Prose composition, but it uses one sentence for each paragraph, alright? Nothing to see here. Move along.)

http://govnn.com - Genius Level

I won't disclose my blog but I do have one, related to programming and Linux.

Level: Genius (I kid you not!)

Maybe it's just all the buzzwords? It's not even such a big blog so far, a dozen or so posts.

Dumb it down WN's just a little, 'kay?

(I get the impression the ISP's of many VNNF members, if not the majority, haven't connected with Linder's main page in months.)

I wonder if locating racist terms are part of the algorithm.

I believe the idea of 'readability' is that good writers write at the level of their target audience. Most metrics of this kind gauge sentence length, ease of vocabulary and so forth. There might be lots of words at VNN that aren't in the analysis dictionary. :)

Hmmmm...I'm skeptical. Profound thoughts need not be cloaked in big words.

EDIT: the biggest words in my blog's first page are 'Renaissance', 'opportunity', and maybe 'conflates'.

It is a kind of genius to be able to express complex thoughts in a way that is highly-accessible. Few people can do that really well.

Well, my blog has no complex thoughts....let's just say I take the concept of mushin quite literally. :)

High School.

Heh. When people claim your writing is unreadable, you should quote this.

I am not sure that in the case of blogs, a higher level is a good thing.

a blog which everyone can read and understand is better than one which only an elite few can read and understand.
