Albino discrimination in Sth Africa
Sunday, 2 December , 2001

In South Africa, thousands of Albinos have launched a campaign to end discrimination against their condition. Despite attempts to promote understanding, many Albinos still face prejudice and ignorance from the wider community. While Albinism affects one in every 4,000 South Africans, it's still misunderstood. Some people believe that the condition is a curse. Others believe that people born with Albinism can never die, they simply disappear.

IHRE (Institute for Human Rights Education) has recorded many instances of racism in Cameroon on the albino race, these people are looked upon by some tribes as children born out of miss fortune and turn to neglect them. They are not given equal right as to the black race, they are not given equal opportunity to meet the challenges of life and development, when they die their remains are taken to the forest for burial following the Bakweri tradition. IHRE have been fighting to get equality between the albino and black race.

Malawi's albinos beat the blues

Malawi's albinos are discriminated against. People are suspicious of their pale skin and yellow hair. In Malawi, albinos are now taking it upon themselves to calm people's fears. After two years of trying, they have just registered their organisation - the Albino Association of Malawi (AAM). "We want to clamour for recognition, to be accepted by society, because we are also human beings," Tony Mkwapatira Nyumayo, a member of AAM, told me.

In the AAM constitution, albinos are demanding - among other things - the end of discrimination in workplaces and institutions like hospitals and schools. They also want the government to provide ointments to protect their skin, as well as special clothing and hats to protect them from direct sunlight.

Leonard Mawaya, a dermatologist with the Ministry of Health, said the AAM's demands are not outrageous. Skin cancer, caused by the sun, is the biggest killer of albinos. Mawaya said that plans are afoot to establish special albino health care units to treat the specific needs of albinos. He said these clinics, apart from medical help, will also sensitise communities on how to look after albino children.

Notice how the writer is trying to discredit the idea of race even while using the term. Albino Blacks are of the same Negroid race as every other Black.

So much for "skin colour doesn't matter" Even the strong anti-racist advocates would be very likely to discriminate against albinos in the workplace.

WTF? LOL. Maybe Daisy is right when she says these people have certain special abilities!::D

Well they certainly are cursed with ugliness. Who is it that is cursed than? The parents, them, is it a family curse?

I always thought that the proud and noble negro was incapable of hate:( I thought that this evil affliction called "hate" was simply only a white affliction. Maybe it is just that their pale skin reminds them of all of the oppression they have endured.

I thought the same when reading that passage.

What spices this black "racism" is that these albinos aren't even of different race, but differ only in skin colour.

Sorry to nerdify the conversation, but does anyone remember that X-Files episode with the albino devil from Nigeria that sucked the melanin out of the skin of its (black) victims? It might have been based on an actual myth from the area, I'm not sure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowman

Yellowman (born Winston Foster in Negril, Jamaica in 1959) is a Jamaican ragga and dancehall deejay. He was extremely popular in Jamaica in the 1980s, coming to prominence with a series of singles that established his reputation. His exaggerated sexual prowess, combined with his long-time social outcast status as an albino (who are denigrated in Jamaica), made Yellowman very popular.

Sexually explicit lyrics earned Yellowman criticism in the mid-1980s, along with most of the rest of the ragga community. By the mid-1990s however, Yellowman released socially conscious material, rising to international fame as part of a popularization led by singers like Buju Banton.

Yellowman overcame two major obstacles: he became popular with his music despite being an albino, and he became as highly recognized in Jamaica as Bob Marley,[citation needed] who popularized reggae in the first place during the 1960s and 1970s. During the early 1980s, Yellowman had over 40 singles and sometimes produced five albums in one year.

In the early 1990s, Yellowman struggled with skin cancer. This led him to re-invent himself with his 1994 album Prayer. He has from then on almost completely devoted his time to spiritual and other social concerns. His latest records were New York in 2003 and Round 1 in 2005.

Another similar albino Jamaican artist who followed Yellowman's musical style is the young deejay Al Beeno, also known as 'Prince Yellow'.
