According to RIA Novosti, the regional Ministry of Economic Development has together with researchers from the Russian Academy of Science studied more than 700 villages in the region and classified them as either “without prospects” or as “with development potential”.

Regional Minister of Economic Development Ivan Stukalov the republican government last Friday decided to move more than 8000 people from the villages “without prospects”. The process will be started in 2008 and completed in 2013.

Most of the villages were opened in the 1950s in connection with the development of forestry. Now, however, the villages remain without industry and social infrastructure, RIA Novosti reports.

The Komi Republic is only one of several Russian regions where major resettlement plans are in the pipeline. Also in Murmansk Oblast several remote villages are planned emptied for people and shut down.
