Chinese officials have effectively banned the gay cowboy drama 'Brokeback Mountain" from showing in cinemas in the world's most populous nation.
According to Daily Variety, Censors feel the subject matter of Taiwan director Ang Lee's film is too controversial for audiences in China where homosexuality remains a taboo.
The decision came despite the movie's status as firm favourite for the Oscars, nominations for which are set to be unveiled ion Los Angeles on Tuesday.
The movie, based on a short story by Annie Proulx and starring Australian Heath Ledger and US actor Jake Gyllenhaal, has dominated the 2006 Hollywood awards season, although it had outraged some US conservatives. . . .
