3,000 North American Jews Immigrating to Israel in 2005 (http://www.aliyah.org/newsletter/jan06.html)
New York (December 21, 2005) - The Jewish Agency for Israel announced today that 2005 was a record-setting year for Jewish immigration to Israel from North America. This year, over 3,000 newcomers from North America - the highest number of North American Jews moving to Israel in more than 20 years - have chosen to settle in Israel.
Since 1929, The Jewish Agency for Israel has helped to advance the immigration of Jews from all over the world and their absorption in Israel. This immigration is called in Hebrew "Aliyah". Through its efforts, three million immigrants – roughly two-thirds of Israel's current population – have been assisted by The Jewish Agency.
Last month The Jewish Agency sponsored a study that assessed the level of satisfaction by immigrants with the absorption process, both in assistance before moving and settling once in Israel. The survey found that 93% of immigrants were very satisfied with their move to Israel.
According to Michael Landsberg, Executive Director of the Jewish Agency's Aliyah Department in North America, "The recent study by the Jewish Agency confirms the positive experience of immigrants to Israel from the United States and Canada, this year. The Jewish Agency has been very involved in assisting many families move their lives to Israel. Many Jews see Israel as an attractive destination for raising families, and with the help from the Jewish Agency we welcome their decision and are working hard to insure a smooth transition."
On Tuesday, December 27th, the last specially chartered EL-AL flight of the year will depart from JFK International Airport in New York City at 6:00 p.m., bringing 208 North American Jews to their new homes in Israel. This El-Al flight, sponsored by the Jewish Agency in cooperation with Nefesh B’Nefesh, marks the culmination of this record-setting year of immigration to Israel.
