Lukashenko calls on Belarussian families to have three children

08.02.2006, 17.29

MINSK, February 8 (Itar-Tass) - Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has called on every Belarussian family to have three children as a minimum.

“At present, there are only 10 million people in Belarus, while the country's territory is far from small. The government must give thought to what can be done about this,” he said on Wednesday at a meeting devoted to the Children of Belarus and Young Talent of Belarus projects for 2010.

“What kind of security can one talk of, if there is nobody to defend the country,” Lukashenko said.

This problem can be settled only by increasing the birth rate and the government has to support those families who have decided to have three children and more.

“I am sure that Belarus will be able to feed 30 million,” he said.

“It is not an easy task to bring up three children, so our families's incomes must be big enough,” Lukashenko said.

The problem of social orphans is also high on the agenda, the president said.

“At present, Belarus has 30,000 orphans, most of them are social orphans, whose mothers and fathers are alive,” Lukashenko said.

“If parents are drug-addicts or alcoholics and are unable to support their children, they should be sent to special rehabilitation and employment centers, where they will work for the state and the money they earn will be transferred to orphanages, where we will bring up and educate their children,” Lukashenko said.

I want Lukashenko to be in the next elections for a Russian president :p I think Belarus had the fastest growing economy from all the European countries last year, despite being embargoed by US and EU. They also don't have any immigrants, I think it is like 99% Slavic. Good job, Luka.

96.5% if you exclude Ukrainians.

Belarus' GDP growth rate was +7.8% in 2005. Considering China had +9.9% and China's growth rate was considered to be amazing... Belarus has made quite the improvement. THAT SAID, GDP per capita can be a misleading way to measure the standard of living in a country. The GDP tends to be very additive and also includes losses and such as part of the GDP. There needs to be a more reasonable measurement.

Not too mention the fact that he's the only standing leader who voted against the dissolution of the SOviet Union, and has probably done the best job of maintaining some order and preventing the devastation of post-Soviet capitalism. His strong opposiiton to privatization and market reform is reason enough for me to support him. I think it was Bush who called him "Europe's last dictator" lol
