Croatia's PM slams racist abuse

The racist abuse of African and South American players featuring in Croatia's league has been condemned by the country's prime minister.

"We are living in a century in which tolerance should be cultivated. We have to stop racist acts," Ivo Sanader told the Sportske Novosti newspaper.

Cameroonian Mathias Chago and Brazilians Eduardo da Silva and Oeliton Araujo dos Santos Etto, who play for Dinamo Zagreb, were taunted with monkey chants during Sunday's match against arch-rivals Hadjuk Split.

Sportske Novosti condemned the "shameful eruption of racism" during the match, which was also interrupted on several occasions when flares were thrown onto the pitch.

Hajduk Split could be fined US$20,000 for the racist behaviour of their fans, as well as playing their next game behind closed doors.

The club had already been fined $3,600 this season, after its supporters waved racists banners during its previous encounter with Dinamo.

Football teams are financially responsible for the behaviour of their fans? Is this a Croatian thing, or a European thing, or what?

It is a commune practice in Europe. Unfortunatelly.

Yep its pretty much europe-wide. The teams have to pay up or they tend to be issued empty-stadium home-game bans (which means losing a lot of money you would get from fans attending the games.)

Obviously politics should stay out of the sport but guess what, I doubt a club would be ostracized if the fans for eg. chanted "MIDGET!" to some short footballer or something. Same thing for most other types of prejudice insults but yet race is the sacred cow above all. It is socially acceptable to say all sorts of shit about people but you can't ever insult someone's race (unless that person happens to be of european descent). The anti-racist advocates who speak of "prejudice" are in all cases hypocrites because they all have a form of prejudice and they all discriminate in some form.. maybe not race but something else.

This is why I am sick of them being on their moral high horse because they manifest their venom in other ways but this is considered "socially acceptable" and thus they feel their shit doesn't stink. Many of these "anti-racists" are simply just sheep who do what society and people like Croatia's PM tell them to do. If they really wanted to break out of the mould and really wanted to put an end to prejudice and discrimination at all levels... then I would respect them but I haven't seen such a case. It would be impossible for mortals to accomplish this ideal.

Bruges was threarened with a hefty fine by UEFA too a few years ago when our virtuous fans kicked the shit out of those awful turkish hooligans after we trashed their useles galatasaray 3-1 in the Champions League.

Meanwhile having one negro player in their own , Hajduk Split team.

I wonder why monkey chants are sanctioned while both team crowd songs,
who are virtually all about "killing" the rival team and crowd, are not.
