View Full Version : Some Ethnic Types of the USSR

From a post (http://www.biodiversityforum.com/showthread.php5?t=40167) by "aeon" at Human Biodiversity Forum. Original image source "a guidebook published in 1970 by the Research Institute of the Soviet Interior Ministry," with captions presumably translated by "aeon."

In the Shoutbox, Leon and others expressed interest in an ethnic guide to Soviet criminals which looks to have been a condensed version of the following gallery. Exhaustive neither in its ethnic coverage nor in its representation of intra-ethnic variation, it's nonetheless a good portrayal of morphological diversity within the USSR.

Geez. That's utterly fascinating. The first "Russian, West" (Number 9) really shows the facial structure of western European man. The influence of the English is well present in the western Russians because of the long British-Russian relationship under the Russian kings.

It's amazing how many types of human beings there are, with their own developmental pedigrees and heritages going back in time, even just in Russia. In a way they each represent a different facet of mother earth; a unique bio-region, climate, and physical environment. It's like I said, Whites have loads of their own "diversity" right within themselves. You could find plenty of "diversity" in just one Norwegian town of 500, centuries ago. It only requires a little sensitivity and consciousness to apprehend that diversity. Failing to appreciate subtle differences among your own people, and requiring extremes, is a new callousness and stupidity. We don't need to become so bone-headed and insensate that we need ritually-scarred, deep-black Somalis who barely speak English and have all sorts of weird non-European sex practices to date our daughters, to experience human "diversity." Lust for that extent of "diversity" is merely worldliness, fetishism, insensitivity. Appreciate your own.

Russia covers so much and various cultures I would imagine this to be kind of accurate. For some of the peoples they included a few examples while others they only had one. Some of the peoples here they only give swarthy, and dark examples while I have seen 'whiter' faces from those cultures/countries.

Can you find Avar types, and now, Ossetians/Iron?

It looks like the Northwest Russians seem the most European; also some of the Komi. By contrast, the North and Northeast Russians are extremely Asiatic, and indistinguishable from Lapps.

I don't think the Russian Northwest types look white because of English mixing, that's absurd. There weren't enough Brits in the area...it's obviously Swedish or Viking/Rus blood. Many Russians in Ukraine and in Crimea have a similar Nordic type.

Some of them have a definite Mongoloid admixture in the eyes. Hard to say much more than that since you'd also have to compare skin tones.

Can you find Avar types, and now, Ossetians/Iron?

It looks like the Northwest Russians seem the most European

What do you mean by 'most European'? They don't appear any more or less Europid than Central, Western or Southern Russians. While Northwest Russians are more depigmented than Southern or Central Russians, the difference is not very large, nor would it be accurately reflected in a small sample of poor-quality, rendered black-and-white plates.

also some of the Komi.

The Komi plates are unrepresentative of that population. The Komi, by and large, belong to the Uralic race. Some Komi populations have a frequency of epicanthic eyefolds (a fairly reliable index of Mongoloid admixture) reach 10% and higher.

By contrast, the North and Northeast Russians are extremely Asiatic

I would reserve the term 'extremely Asiatic' for individuals or populations displaying at least a few of the diagnostic criteria used to differentiate the Mongoloid race from the Europid, such as straight, coarse black hair, epicanthic eyefolds, concave occular plane, portruding eyeballs, flat,-low-rooted noses, and flattened horizontal facial profile.

and indistinguishable from Lapps.

Again, you have to keep in mind how small the sample is, and the low-quality of the pictures - even so, differences, such as the Russians having lighter pigmentation and more profiled, leptoprosopic faces show. While Northern/Northeastern Russians have considerable Uralic admixture from historic absorption of the Finno-Ugric tribes indigenous to the area, the overall morphological profile of the population is unmistakably Europid, and certainly no more 'Asiatic' that that of Eastern Finns and Estonians.

I don't think the Russian Northwest types look white

Your terminology is, again, confusing. From what I can see, every single one of the 'Russian' plates depicts and unmistakably Europid individual, with some of the Northern/Eastern samples showing visible Uralic admixture. If only the Northwestern Russians are white, what are the rest? Central Russians, for instance, are a Europid population that shows levels of blondism/depigmentation comparable to those of Scandinavian populations. If not 'European', how would you describe them?

There weren't enough Brits in the area...it's obviously Swedish or Viking/Rus blood.

This is equally absurd. At least least 70% of NW Russians are tall, depigmented, leptoprosopic mesocephals/dolicocephals ("Nordics"), and frequencies of this phenotype among other Russian groups are also quite high (35-75%). The phenotype is simply far too common to attribute to Germanic admixture, especially considering the fact that genetic testing fails to find any detectable Germanic admixture in any Russian sub-population.

Some of them are of unadulterated Mongoloid stock (the Eskimos and Tungus, for example). You're right about the pictures being a poor indicator of pigmentation, though.
