Watched it again tonight. Don't know why I ever considered it good. What a bore. God, go ahead and shoot Johnnie-boy already!

I agree. I never liked Taxi Driver, either. Then after Scorsese did Raging Bull, I loved everything he directed.

I love MEAN STREETS. But unlike his later pix, he shot this one on a tiny budget with LA mostly standing in unconvincingly for Little Italy.
If nothing else, it's great because real-life guinea mob lowlives (and wannabes) who are loud proponents of Saint Marty's work don't like this one. Not enough violence and scenes of sharkskin-suited goombahs gratuitously pushing around 9-to-5 nobodies, and too much 'pointless' character study and sundry little touches that make them look ridiculous instead of ruthless and unprincipled, ie, 'heroic'.
Like the bouffant-combing bada-bing retard said loudly as he rose to leave his theater seat as the credits were rolling, "Fuckin' movie dint have no fuckin' plot!" Having of course no idea what a "plot" actually was, although pretty certain that a movie ought to have a pretty fuckin' good one.
