Americans have a far lower frequency of blond hair (and to a lesser extent, light eyes) than the modern inhabitants of those countries from which most Americans derive their ancestry. Southern European, Amerindian, and Jewish admixture is obviously partly responsible for this phenomenon, but other factors are probably at work. Does anyone have any theories about this phenomenon?

Southern Europeans and Jews are concentrated in the urban north east. Amerindian admixture is pretty low among Americans from what I remember. Which regions are you looking at? Vermont and Maine, for example, is made up of mostly "old Americans" and with many French-Canadians. From what I'm told by someone who has been out there it's blond and blue eyes all the way.

Another thought is, if your observation is true, that it has much to do with the specific areas of England, Ireland (western Ireland, I'm thinking), and Germany where these folks ancestors immigrated from.

Many Americans may be predominantly Northern European, but not completely Northern European. Treat me as an example, I am mostly Scandinavian, but my mother has Cajun blood with its dark features.

I don't know about the hair/eye color, but I'd be reluctant to consider any part of Maine south of Bangor truly "old American." Certainly the whole coastline is not, maybe excepting only the extreme northern part of the coast. Homos of a certain age who consider Provincetown too wild move on to Ogunquit, and are welcomed with open arms (http://www.gayogunquit.com/).

Also, Vermont has been overrun by people from other states, excepting maybe the "Northeast Kingdom." Though who exactly is to blame for their electing a vile piece of garbage like Bernie Sanders (who is sure as hell no "old American" by anyone's standards) to the Senate I have no idea.

It seems there's a lot of Irish in Maine:

Cool website I just found:

The 2000 Census provides the latest information about the many ethnic and ancestry groups in the United States. The following series of county-level choropleth maps, which reveals the distribution of many of these groups, draws on this resource. The maps are in PDF format and require the free Adobe Reader to view.

Similarly, I owe my dark features to French Canadian ancestry on my mother's side. My Father on the other hand is blonde/blue.

According to what I just saw on VDARE, Sanders actually opposes the H1B Visa scam, or at any rate its expansion. Who'd a thunk it? I sure as hell wouldn't have.
