Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov used performance-enhancing drugs before his death, blood and urine tests revealed, according to a federal investigation by the Russian government.
Russia's Investigative Committee issued a statement yesterday saying that Cherepanov, 19, who was the Rangers' first-round pick in the 2007 NHL draft, "had for several months engaged in doping."
The statement did not specify which performance-enhancing drugs Cherepanov used before he collapsed on the bench Oct. 13 and died while playing for Avangard Omsk of the KHL.
The statement also said Cherepanov suffered from myocarditis, a condition in which blood does not get to the heart fast enough to support intense physical exertion.
The Rangers had no official comment on the Russian government's findings. Rangers coach Tom Renney said before last night's game that he had only recently heard of the report and did not think he should comment.
The report also cited the failings of the arena staff in Vityaz, a Moscow suburb where Cherepanov collapsed. "A row of gross violations was committed by the medical brigade helping A. Cherepanov," the statement read. Doctors arrived on the scene 12 minutes after he collapsed and the defibrillator used on Cherepanov had a weak battery, the report said.
Cherepanov's myocarditis should have prevented him from passing a physical, and Russian prosecutors accused the Avangard director, Mikhail Denisov, of negligence earlier this month. Denisov has since been fired.
