My knowledge of Irish history is unfortunately poor, and the things I read on the net and wikipedia isnt really something.

I was reading on the IRA and I was wondering is IRA considered a left-wing organisation ?

Apparently the IRA in the '60 and the '70 was Marxist. Although there was a split over the left-wing ideology the more active PIRA who was against the marxist ideology still works closely with the social-deomcratic and mulitculturalist Sinn Fein and apparently has ties with other marxist organisations such as FARC.

Could somebody explain this a bit ? Thanks.

Bump.

Atleast someone can spare 15 minutes of his time for a brief explanation.

Their political roots would be socialist.

It is too complicated an organization to state definitely either way. It is primarily a liberation or defense force. The politics comes a distant second, and you need to look at their political wings to answer. Sinn Fein tend to be quasi-leftist, but the smaller groups are explicitly Marxist/socialist.

The PIRA split from the old school Marxist OIRA. The PIRA put defense of Catholic areas ahead of ideology. SF is the political wing of the PIRA, not loosely affiliated, they are thee same group essentially, but with different methods: the ballot box and the armalite as the saying goes. Membership tend to overlap.
