It's the middle of the season and another of these lists:

Lefty Pitcher - Lefty Grove

Righty Pitcher - Walter Johnson

Catcher - Johnny Bench

First Base - Lou Gehrig

Second Base - Rogers Hornsby

Third Base - Mike Schmidt

Shortstop - Honus Wagner

Left Field - Ted Williams

Center Field - Willie Mays

Right Field - The Babe

Charlie Gehringer edged out of 2B because of Hornsby's average + power. Mays beats Cobb on defense.

Pretty impressive team there.

I might consider replacing Ted Williams with Stan Musial though. I know Ted was superior offensively, and probably the greatest hitter of all time, but I might like a more well-rounded team.

Stan was probably stronger defensively, as well as faster...and more well-rounded overall.
I think he was a pretty darn good hitter in his own right too, so you're not giving THAT much up on offense.

Ya Musial was a close second---Williams didn't give a shit about defense but what a hitter.
Musial played alot of his time at first base.

Cobb was never noted for his defense--Mays could field and throw his ass off. His power against Cobb's average. Mays was not a stupid player, either, and at his peak was a 5 tool player who was always in the game.

Mays by a long eyelash.

No. Mays comes the closest to me as the best all around player in history. That's why.
Black Bob Gibson was the best pitcher I've ever seen with my own eyes, but he doesn't measure up to Walter Johnson.

I believe you...but my list was just the top gold glove winners per position.
Of course there are probably other players at those positions better all around, or maybe even better defensively from the earlier days before they awarded Gold Gloves...

It saddens me that I am too young to have seen many of these greats in action, and can only see them on highlight film or read about them on Wiki and such.

Oh I had to fix my list too...I had Maddux at 16, when he actually won 18 (most all time any position). Apparently the site I used for my initial list was a bit outdated.

I only saw Robinson play when the Orioles ( or any AL team for that matter) were on the NBC Game of the Week (before cable) and when the Pirates played the Orioles in the '71 WS.
There were highlights on the TV news as well and newspapers and SI and Sporting News. That's how you followed things....not so long ago..:D
