Jewish prisoner 'abused' by lack of kosher meals

THE Jewish Representative Council of Ireland will inspect the kitchens of a jail after a prisoner complained to the High Court that his food is not kosher.

The case, the first of its kind in Ireland, has been brought by a Jewish prisoner who was extradited to Ireland from the United Kingdom to stand trial for alleged sexual offences.

The prisoner complained to the High Court that his constitutional rights are being infringed by the failure of the Irish Prison Service to serve him kosher food in Cloverhill Prison.

"I should not be punished or tortured, I have not had a proper meal in months and I am entitled to three kosher meals a day without exception," the prisoner told the High Court.

"This is religious discrimination," he said.

"Muslims get Halal food. I feel abused every day of the week, there is nothing in the Irish Constitution that suggests I can be subjected to such abuse.

"If my food is not prepared in accordance with Jewish rules, it is not kosher. If you use the same pots and pans (used to prepare other prisoners' foods) it is not kosher."

The prisoner took the legal action days before Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year festival that commemorates the creation of the world.

Rosh Hashanah, which lasts for two days, began last Saturday but the High Court refused the reliefs sought by the prisoner after ruling that it was satisfied that Cloverhill prison had taken every step to ensure that the prisoner's dietary requirements were being met.

The prison's deputy governor, Ronan Maher, acceded to a recommendation that emerged during the proceedings that the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland -- with whom Cloverhill has been liasing to resolve the dispute -- visit the prison to inspect the kitchens.

This would allow the Irish-Jewish authorities to advise the authorities and confirm that the prisoner's dietary requirements are being met.

Kosher food is produced according to a strict set of standards and is not solely confined to avoiding pork.

Dairy and meat must not be mixed and care must be taken with the way food is obtained, stored and prepared. Non-kosher and kosher instruments and food must be kept apart.

Jewish inmates in America have filed numerous lawsuits to force prisons to provide them with kosher meals.

As a result of the litigation, Jewish kosher diet task forces have sprung up throughout America to supervise the preparation of kosher food for inmates there.

Earlier this year a pan-European Chaplains' conference was held in the Netherlands to discuss the plight of an estimated 3,500 Jewish prisoners In Europe.

Rabbis, Jewish community leaders, chaplains, justice ministers, prison officials, jurists and lawyers from 62 countries across Europe attended the three-day discussion.

Whenever you fly on an airplane, request the kosher meal. Its apparently about twice as good as the slop they feed us Gentiles.

I sort of agree with your first sentiment, but not the second. It was never said that every Jew worldwide would move to Israel. It is our ancestral homeland perhaps, the way Italy is for Italian Americans, but we live all over just as do other ethnic groups.

Funny story though. I recall kevinwalsh recently talking about how when he was doing time, there were always gentiles who claimed to be Jewish for same reason...to get the kosher meals which were always better quality.

The more I watch, the more it seems true that these people -- high and low -- really do consider themselves "God's chosen," and superior to everybody else. My mom and dad never told me this. I wonder if they knew. It gets clear, too, who transmitted the posture of "offended minority privilege" to black people.

You know, growing up we had Jewish neighbors for 20 years. Right next door in a brown stucco fortress-like house. My father and mother had to know. They were in constant tension and battle with these people over property matters. But they never talked them down. And my dad, who had some strong Scorpio nature, never missed anything about facts concerning neighbors. He also was a Lithuanian who grew up in Chicago and he knew ethnicities. They even had a son who looked, in retrospect, as Jewish as they come. But they never breathed a word that they were Jews, keeping their sons in ignorance. Oh, the noble Gentile mind, how you leave yourself open to treachery.

Even by my 30's, and after being around the Jewish 'superior' attitude (not knowing who was who still, seeing "people as people"), I was still oblivious. Talk about masters of the low profile and psychological conditioning. Jews lie low very assiduously, while conditioning people away from forbidden thoughts, or even awareness of what's in front of them. (We've seen them now reap massive fruit of this blindness-conditioning with their 9-11 attack.) The Posners were being protected from analysis by a little box inside our house.

Anyway, these neighbors -- esp. the wife -- were the most unfriendly, bitchy, cold people on the block. You didn't even go there for Halloween.
I used to wonder, "Does Mrs. Posner have a heart somewhere? She must." They literally affected the social tone of the neighborhood. The would never come to a neighborhood gathering. We were four boys, but somehow their son and daughter -- contemporaries in age to us -- never played with any of us. They remained aloof and mysterious. Seeing it now, they made our childhoods much less humanly pleasant than could have been. Multiply this effect by millions: That's what Jews do to Gentile societies just by their presence. And it's not understood. The Posners were being protected by a little illuminated box inside our house called a television set, which taught the occupants of the house which thoughts and words were forbidden.

But if I had known the Posners were Jews, their coldness would not have been so confusing and hurtful, and I would have been able to make sense of the world much sooner -- and how it is that a fully mature woman with children could manage to never say "hello" to the boy-next-door for well over a decade.
