Remarks on Holocaust offensive, says archbishop

THE ARCHBISHOP of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, has expressed concern about remarks reportedly made by Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan, which he described as “offensive to the Jewish community”.

Speaking at the end of a Mass for teachers last night, the archbishop said the comments allegedly made by Tiernan at the Electric Picnic festival in Co Laois were “offensive to all who feel revulsion concerning the Holocaust, one of the most horrific events in human history”.

“I can only decry the comments as insensitive and hurtful to the suffering of the victims and to a memory which is sacred,” Dr Martin said.

“Comedy does not bring with it unlimited licence. Comedy can easily become the forerunner of intolerance. Indeed comedy can be subtly dressed up to be cruel and to show disregard. Trivialisation of the Holocaust can be as hurtful as denial”.

The archbishop also noted that “the changing make-up of modern Irish society requires all of us to be particularly sensitive to any expression of racism or intolerance”.

Last night the Holocaust Education Trust Ireland said it was “appalled” by the remarks allegedly made by Tiernan, which were reported in the Sunday Tribune last weekend.

In a statement, trust chairman Ruairí Quinn said of Tiernan that “as someone in the public eye, he has to take responsibility for his racist comments. We are equally concerned about the report of the audience’s reaction, which appears to have endorsed, sustained and enjoyed his comments. We would hope that the Irish public will choose to stay away from such racist ‘entertainment’ in future”.

The statement continued that the trust “utterly condemns Mr Tiernan’s anti-Semitic outburst and calls upon him to repudiate completely and apologise unreservedly for the comments about the Holocaust and the Jews he is reported to have made.

“This incident highlights the necessity and relevance of the role of Holocaust education in order to educate and inform people in Ireland about the Holocaust, intolerance and anti-Semitism.”

In a statement earlier yesterday Mr Tiernan said he was “greatly upset by the thought that these comments have caused hurt to others as this was never my intention”.

He continued: “the things that I said in front of a live audience were in an attempt to explain my belief that one of the duties of the comic performer is to be reckless and irresponsible and that the things that they say should NEVER [his emphasis] be taken out of context.”

At the event he had prefaced “my rant by saying that it should not be taken seriously and as such, the rant took place as an example of my argument. While it is out of context, which it most definitely is now, it seems callous, cruel and ignorant,” he said.

Holocaust jokes can be funny and im not one of the anti semites or deniers here, when Robot Chicken did a vignette which went "Today on Mythbusters, the holocaust" it was hilarious.

How are we supposed to make any reasonable comment about this when the remarks themselves are not provided?

Martin is a Vatican II fake Catholic who "celebrates diversity" and is open to homosexual "unions" among other things. It's no surprise he's screeching about the so-called Holocaust.

He doesn't look like he's in character. He looks like some restaurant owner or something dressed in a bishop's costume just for fun.

Tiernan says he’s sorry for Jewish jibes

COMEDIAN Tommy Tiernan has apologised for his controversial comments about the Holocaust, just one month ahead of his American tour.

Controversy erupted following the Navan comedian’s comments in Electric Picnic recently which have dubbed him anti-Semitic, sparking outrage from the Jewish community.

And Tiernan, who has never eaten his words during any controversy before, has posted a statement on his official website saying that his comments were taken out of context, and he never meant to hurt others.

His apology came just as Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said comments attributed to Tiernan were “offensive”.

Departing from his prepared sermon at the end of a Mass last night for teachers in Bray - and without referring to Tiernan by name – Archbishop Martin said remarks attributed to the comedian were “offensive to the Jewish community and offensive to all who feel revulsion concerning the Holocaust, one of the most horrific events in human history”.

Tiernan’s public statement comes just before he goes on tour in Los Angeles and San Francisco from October 14 to 17, where audiences are sensitive to issues such as the Holocaust.

In an interview with Hot Press at Electric Picnic he had waxed lyrical on what he would have done in the Holocaust.

“These Jews, these f *cking c***s come up to me, Christkilling bastards. F*cking six million? I would have got 10 or 12 million out of that, no problem. F*ck them. Two at a time, they would have gone. Hold hands, get in there. Leave us your teeth and your glasses,” he said.

In his statement, the comedian said: “As a private individual I am greatly upset by the thought that these comments have caused hurt to others as it was never my intention.”

He said: “One of the duties of a comic performer is to be reckless and irresponsible”. However, Dr Robert A Alper, a comedian and rabbi from Vermont in the US is outraged at Mr Tiernan’s statement, which he says is an attempt to “weasel out” of the issue.

“To me that’s really stupid. I don’t think that comedians should be reckless or irresponsible. Comedians should be concerned about the feelings of other human beings.” “It’s hurtful. Comedians (in America) don’t do anti-semitic things. I’ve rarely heard of it. There are plenty of tasteless comedians out there but none of them pick on a group of people.”

Tiernan has previously landed himself in hot water when the Broadcasting Complaints Commission found his jokes about Travellers on the Late Late Show last October beyond acceptable standards.

Tommy stressed: “As a private individual I am greatly upset by the thought that these comments have caused hurt to others as this was never my intention.”

However, the Rabbi says he does not accept the statement as an apology, and he suggests that the comedian says outright “I’m sorry”.
