Australian Cheerleaders Told to Cover Up

SYDNEY, Australia - Australian cheerleaders have been banned from baring midriffs by officials of the sport who fear displays of skin may encourage eating disorders.

Gymnastics Australia has ordered cheerleading troupes to find new uniforms by the end of the year.

Nerine Cooper, national cheerleading manager for Gymnastics Australia, said the decision, which followed similar moves in the United States and elsewhere, was needed because cheerleaders often performed in front of family groups.

"We don't want girls to feel under pressure to lose weight because of uniforms," she told Sydney's Sunday Telegraph.

But Lisa Ince, head of Sydney Promotional Dancers, said the order was unfair.

"It's ridiculous really, if the thinking is that a midriff is offensive, then every dance school and athletics club would face the same restrictions," Ince said.

The ban will affect about 105 teams registered with Gymnastics Australia.

In the United States, the National Federation of State High School Associations issued a new rule for the 2006-07 school year requiring that cheerleading uniforms cover the midriff.

Right thing to do, wrong reason. A good reason would be, "Because parents say they don't want their teenage daughters wearing that in front of a football crowd.", but they used some bullshit thing about eating disorders. Could there be some weird liberal thing at work here, where they wanted to do it for moral reasons, but didn't want anyone to think they were doing it for moral reasons?

EDIT:
Get your mind out of the gutter! Admit it, you saw my name as the thread author, and the title, and you thought you were going to see some cheerleader soft porn!:D

True, but it's also ridiculous to think that having to cover up midriffs matters.

I could see how it could encourage eating disorders in some girls. Seems like its pretty popular among young women today to starve/puke to be skinny.

Reminds me of the little boy sticking his finger in the dyke.

Laudable intentions if indeed they are genuine, but unlikely to yield and positive results. At this stage of the game removing all the imagery likely to aggravate eating disorders would be near impossible and would solve the wrong problem at any rate.

Eat halfway decent food and do situps. Pretty simple stuff. No need to turn yourself into a skinned rabbit...

Cheerleaders are even more stupid than marching girls. These girls need to be encouraged to drop this innate pursuit and take up netball or something.

But girls will, and they do... but never mind. It's not your problem. Continue condescending (hint: don't have kids).

The problem (as i see it) is that on the rare occassions the media stop talking about the very thin and alluding to how aspirational that figure is, they infer that the very curvy, plastic figure is the only other to work towards. There's no middle ground...the media treats the extremely plastic looking as 'normal' in preference to the very thin or vice versa while always ignoring the ordinary, average figure.
