War of Liquidation?

Were the 'Troubles' and the effort to re-integrate the six counties into the Irish Republic a war of liquidation of Catholics vs. Protestants?

I came across an affirmative viewpoint during a discussion in the SB, and was surprised. I thought this view was common only among Lenny Murphy types.

I don't know enough about it. I do hate to admit it but the evidence does seem to show the protestant paramilitaries were more likely to deliberately kill civilians (I mean within Ulster)...
