Backing For BNP Policies
Updated: 09:35, Tuesday April 25, 2006

A Sky News poll has revealed widespread public support for many of the BNP's policies - but less backing for the party itself.

The findings will prove worrying for all the main parties in the run-up to the local elections in nine days' time.

The internet pollster YouGov questioned 1,841 people between last Friday and Monday.

They were asked whether they supported halting all further immigration to the UK.

Nearly six out of 10 - 59% - who did not know it was a BNP plan, said they would back the idea.

But among those who were told it was BNP policy, the level of support was 48% - a drop of 11% .

More than half of those surveyed agreed all immigrants should be denied the right to bring further members of their family into this country.

However, the number fell by 9% among people who were aware it was a BNP policy.

The average level of support for the BNP's ideas was 55% among those who were not told where they had come from.

Among those who knew it was 49%.

BNP leader Nick Griffin told Sky News: "Some people come to us absolutely appalled with what's being done to this country by the politicans.

"They are quite simply full of hatred including for ethnic minorities living near to them who've had an unfair
crack of the whip and who've had a lot more money spent on their areas than on white working-class areas.

"We say to these people that this is not the fault of the immigrants, the people to blame are the politicans
who've created this multi-racial society without any democratic mandate from the British people.

"If you want to change things you've got to change the politicans and not blame perfectly innocent immigrants."

Pollsters say if the BNP changed its image, it could do very well in the local elections.
