Americans are the whites in the USA.Yes, most people in the world think this and most whites & non-whites in the US think this pretty much subconsciously, despite all those ridiculous "I AM an American" commercials. The problem is, though, that "American" is not an overtly ethnic term, as (say) "Norwegian" is, so it leaves the door open for non-whites to get in.

Italians certainly classify as WHITE.They are "white" (mostly) but a lot of northern europeans certainly wouldnt consider them as a group, to be kin. with good reasons (ethnicity culture linguistic and religious)
