I just recently got into his stuff. My favorite so far is "The Music of Erich Zann". I didn't particularly care for "The Shunned House". Another good one was "The Rats in the Walls".

At The Mountains of Madness is my favorite, but I like almost everything he wrote.

What was the deal with "The Rats in the Walls"? Was he the rats? Or did they really exist?

H.P. Lovecraft is the greatest English-language writer of fiction from the 20th century.
My favorite Lovecraft tale is "The Shadow Over Innsmouth."

Did he publish any full length books? All I can find at the bookstore are short stories.

It has been at least a decade since I read him so take this with a grain of salt. I do not remember full-length novels but "At the Mountains of Madness", mentioned above, is what I recall as the closest thing approaching one. I highly recommend it as well as "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", also mentioned above.

I can't remember... Gonna hafta read that one again.
Lovecraft wrote some pretty great stories... I'm surprised I find him readable, considering his language is pretty baroque at times.
"The Rats in the Walls" and "The Shadow over Innsmouth" are probably my two favourites...

He published ONE full-length novel, which is still fairly short (around 200 pages), entitled The Case of Dr. Charles Dexter Ward. It quite good, though not his best material. They made an obscure, low-budget movie version of it around 1990 or so, that is one of the best cinematic adaptations of his work (one of the few that doesn't suck miserably, that is). Its pretty good, though I can't recall its name just now (its not real easy to find anymore).
I own two videocassettes filled with Lovecraft-themed student films, some of which suck badly, and some of which are pretty damn good. The first (and far superior) tape contains a 15-minute version of "The Music of Erich Zann" that is widely considered to also be among the finest examples of Lovecraft-themed cinematic adaptations. These student films are from the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon.
I'll try to remember to re-read "The Rats in the Walls" when I get home from work in 10 hours or so, and let you know my take on it. I've read every Lovecraft story 5-10 times each, but it gets difficult to remember them all merely by name.

It's been years since I read that story. I remember he entered a dungeon at the end and said that the remains of ancient hominids or something were scattered about the place.
"At the Mountains of Madness" is good, but it could have been compressed into an equally suspenseful short story. I don't think it needed to be 100+ pages long.

I think my favorite is his novel The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath.

But everything he wrote was good. Such a pity he died at an early age.

I was reading a little HP Lovecraft on the bus back from Boston.
"The Outsider" is pretty good. I didn't see it coming when I read it the first time (A year or 2 ago?)
