The possibility of Down syndrome is a worry for pregnant women, especially for those past their mid-30s. This condition is characterized by an abnormality on chromosome 21 and results in impaired cognitive function and some characteristic physical features. Until recently, the only way to get a prenatal diagnosis was with a test called amniocentesis. It involves using a needle to withdraw fluid from the amniotic sac and carries a small risk of complications. Now, a blood test has been developed that can diagnose almost 99 percent of infants with Down syndrome at an early stage of pregnancy. The test, called MaterniT21, is being rolled out in selected cities across the U.S.

The new test, from the San Diego firm Sequenom, is far safer for pregnant women than previously existing tests, which could cause miscarriage, the New York Post reports (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=16f9hmi2p/EXP=1325271905/**http%3A//www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion/opedcolumnists/the_end_of_down_syndrome_yetA47ZB9s5Rzg0Fjbb5QM%3Futm_campaign=OutbrainA%26%2338;utm_source=OutbrainArticlepages%26%2338;obref=obinsite). But the ability to screen for Down Syndrome easily will also likely lead to far more frequent abortions in cases where the syndrome is detected

In the United Kingdom do-it-yourself urine tests to screen for Down syndrome are being developed. Other promised developments include blood tests which could isolate fetal cells in maternal blood. Such testing matches what Western women already expect during standard antenatal care. Testing is presented as not only benign and unproblematic, but also as fulfilling responsible pregnant behaviour
I think these are wonderful steps towards removing unwanted defects from the human species. Hopefully every person in congress is burdened with a retarded or otherwise defective child that could have been prevented with a prenatal test and abortion, leading to new standards of ethics. This seems to be the only way that things will ever change. But considering that congressmen will go overseas to places where genetic engineering and late stage abortions are legal and benefit from it, then come back to the U.S. and preach about the evils of the same technologies they use, I doubt anything will ever change.

Prenatal testing may be the greatest devolopment in human health since the invention of penecilin.
