This isn't the first time this has happened. Nikita Khrushchev was supposed to have said "We will bury you" to much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Western media, but actually said, "we wil outlive you."
I suppose the answer is a completely independent and incorruptible translation service, if such were possible.

Even at face value the alleged remark is no more remarkable than Regean's attitudes to the Soviet Union, Israel being a particular regime. I'm surprised that Israeli official even bothered to own up.
